1968 number matching...
I have been told by mopar tech support that in 1968 the vin was not stamped on all the right rear rails of the engine, some had it and some did not and some had numbers that really did not mean a thing. Only the date stamp was on it. Can anyone verify this?
Thank you |

All references to left and right on a car are as viewed sitting in the drivers seat looking forward. When you say "right rear rails" I assume you mean the pan rail extension under the starter on the LEFT side.
The VIN was never stamped there, the number on the pan rail extension, if present, is the engine serial number. If a '68 block has a VIN, it would be stamped in the top rear of the block where it mates to the bellhousing. Some early '68 model year blocks weren't stamped at all because the law mandating VIN stamping didn't apply until January 1, 1968; '68 cars built in '67 were hit and miss. The numbers stamped in the data pad adjacent to the distributor will tell you when the engine was built. |

The top of the engine where it meets the transmission has the last 6 didgits of the vin. Not sure what the numbers on the right side of the engine are, but the date code on the left..drivers side does have the correct date on it according to Mopar tech. Is there anywhere that this would be written?
