Indy heads on a 408?
I was wondering if anyone has any experience or insite on and heads offered by Indy on a 408 for a really nice street motor. I may possibly run this car at the track once or twice a year. Which for most of us means once or twice a month. Anyhow. I would like some opinions on this. Lets hear'em

I would imagine they would do really nice. With a mello cam and pump gas, I could see 400+ HP without blinking an eye.
The only thing to these heads is the performance of a large port runner and easy driving does not mix well. Lazy air/fuel travels equal crappy resopnse. A smaller than optimon carb would help alot for the street. A swap out for the track. Alot depends on your tolorance or def. of street engine or streetabilty. Some call it quites with a 10-1, 292 purple cam and 4.10's while others crying and beging for more. Whats the rest of the idea like? |

I will probably be running a 904 trans. with some where between 3.55- 4.10 gears with 10" by 26 tire. Not sure on the converter. I will use a tighter than most would say since it has seemed to work well for me. But if we all built a car the same way what fun would it be.

I am sure the Indy heads are a great head with the right combo but as Rumblefish stated, the larger port may hurt velocity and make for a poor combo street engine. A buddy of mine runs high 10's with a 408 and Edelbrock heads so there is plenty of potential with an simple Eddy head and some porting.

FYI I plan on using a Indy head for my big block stroker combo but it is more strip than street oriented. They are an excellent company. I used the Edelbrock head for my street 408 stroker

I'm running Indy 440-1C heads on a 408, using a forged 383 crank that has been indexed, knife edged and balanced, GRP 6.535" rods, and Ross pistons. The heads have had a lot of port work, and I'm running a large Comp Cams solid roller. Injected on alcohol, this combo has run 7.94 @ 168, shifting at 7800 rpm and going through the traps at 8300.

I got a buddy with a 408 and Indy heads, makes 650 or 750 horsepower in his Dart.
If you have any specific questions, I can give him a call. |
