Converted my dual point

I converted my mallory dual point with a mallory unilite conversion kit. IT only took about an hour and works great for about half price of a new Unilite. 110.00 from jegs everything included in kit with easy directions

Hope it lasts longer than 5 min. for you. THey are prone to failure due to power surges and ground problems. A better set up would be a stock dist. with Mopar recurve springs and an MSD box.

Yeah, one friend of mine killed four of those optic emiters at about $65 a piece I think they cost. THen he got smart and put an MSD box in it and he never had any more problems with it.

What do you guys generally pick up ET wise with the MSDs over the dual points or even the single points?

couple of hundreths if the points is set properly. It is more in how well the motor operates and runs bottom to top and reposnsiveness. I have seen it pick up a tenth or even a little more in some cases. Like I said depends on how well the set up is.

I had a Mallory Unilite a while back. I never had the optic emitters go out like many of my friends, nope…mine destroyed it self from the inside out. It started squeaking one day, getting louder, and louder at an exponential rate. I pulled over to see what was going on, pulled my distributor out (after checking a few other things) and found that the shaft that inserts into the cam gear could wiggle side to side about a half inch in both directions .
I threw that broken piece of ____ in the trash and got a MSD billet distributor and a MSD 6AL…the car picked up a 3 tenths (if memory serves) and has run great ever since (that was about 8 years ago

Nothing, unless there is something wrong with your old unit. You were talking about MSD vs points ignition, but you can use MSD with points ignition too, and it will work great. Ignitions job is to fire the compressed fuel / gas charge in the cylinder. If it fires, then you really can't do it any better with a stronger spark. When the cylinder pressures get higher, you will need more spark energy to do that, than a stock ignition system can provide. This is not the case in most, if not all, pump gas engines. MSD has a multispark feature at lower rpm, which often helps idle quality with radical camshafts.
