Default 8 3/4 Yoke removal problem

After Abusing my drivetrain at the track, I had a slight u-joint issue...it broke...taking a small chunk out of the yoke (on the rear end) at the same time. Does anyone recall the toque spec on the nut that retains the yoke on an 8 3/4 pumpkin (742 case). My impact won't take the nut off, but the maximum toque off my impact is only 250 ft/lbs. I seem to remember 275 ft/lbs as the torque spec for the nut...is that right? Any pointers on removing the yoke would be appreciated.

It should be in the 240 - 260 range. If the wheels are turning, then you aren't getting the full torque of the impact.

I would suggest that you use a large breaker bar and put some weight into it.

Those nuts are really tight & tough to remove. Try using a large pipe wrench w/ a pipe on the handle to hold the yoke & put a breaker bar w/ the proper H.D. 6 point socket.Use a pipe on the breaker bar handle too. this always worked for me. a little heat on the nut will help too.

This is not an answer but it a related question. I have a 3.55 SG so the nut has come off and gone on with no wheels turning. My problem is getting the yoke off the front after removing the nut. Do I need to take the center section back out entirely in order to do this?

I usually tap it off with a dead blow but a yoke puller is the best method

Dead blow is what I tried with no success. I need to find a new puller. Thanks for the quick response.

240 ft. lbs. is the correct torque for the 742.

Wow, this brings back memories...Thanks for the help, I just bought a better impact (with 600+ ft lbs) and blasted the nut off...this was about 2.5 years ago.

For the guy with the yoke that won't come off; just keep tapping the yoke with a hammer, it should come off eventually...mine did.

That's what I ended up doing was tapping many times on the back of the yoke. I didn't need to buy a new puller. I'm still layed-off so I must work with what I have. Its all back on holding the driveshaft now.

Thanks for the help, guys,

Andy

Damper puller works fine, Paul.
