What brand of cam are you going to use?? That's about the only thing I see that's a bit sketchy in your build up.You have a cam with a bunch of duration and not much lift over stock.

Sounds good, I prefer Mopar Performance cams, I'd go RV cam, but I won't knock your choice. I'd take a look for a set of truck heads for 87-91 318, high swirl heart shape chamber. Engine secrets book shows a remarkable increase in power using a ported set of these with 360 valves. I am on the hunt for them big time, when I get a set ported out, they are going immediatly on my 91 4x4.

If your gonna leave those valves in there bring your duration down, otherwise bring the lift up a bit and change the valve sizes a tad.How much compression are you willing to run also?

To be honest I would not waste my time with a 318, even .030 over does not yield a very large cylinder. 360 short blocks are out there by the plenty and would yield alot more
performance. If you could get a 340 all the better. The only concern with the 360 of course is the need for external balancing.
this can be over come if you know of a real good machine shop. Good Luck

Check out some back issues of Mopar Muscle. In the Ocrober Issue, they had a Factory Connection article on building a 318 to compete with a 360. They recommend a 4 barrel manifold with a small vacuum secondary carb and a mild hydraulic slider cam. The part # for the cam is P4452767 and springs #P4286813. They recommend using Headers or magnum style manifolds for the exhaust. They also recommend the MP ignition kit. Theor claim for this package would be about 250 hp at the crank. The article goes on about building the motor more, all the way up to 300 hp. It all depends on what you are willing to pay. Making a copy of the 340-360hp 340 engines gives the 318 about 230-240 hp. I agree with you, using what you already have in the vehicle saves money and hassle if you are building a budget ride. My 318 in the LeBaron is getting to be a real sleeper, especially since I regapped the plugs and found one to have no gap at all, therefore firing on 7 cylinders only. Good luck on the buildup and let us know how it goes. cruzerjd

Joey:

Sounds like a decent combo to get into the 14's with, but saying it will make 300 Hp is a little ways away. A cars hould be able to run 14.5's with about 225 Hp in a 3400 Car (roughy based upon factory ET times and my own experience).

Horse power figures can be deceiving anyway. How many times have we heard online and elsewhere say "my motor makes 500 Hp"? Most times these are not actaul DYNO machine numbers. For instance, Desktop Dyno sez my combo makes 420 HP, where an ET calculator sez that it takes only 294 HP to run 12.87. My motor is actually making about 320-325 HP to run this fast. So don;t worry about making a certain number - just build a well balanced combo.

I guess I would recommend the Mopar Performance 474/274 Cam for your combo first, more pop (compression) second, and from there I'd move off the motor and start looking at stall converters and steeper gears.

I have a friend who runs a 4000 pound 1980 Dodge truck in FT/SA who held the national record at 12.49 last year. 318's ARE NOT a waste of time or money, they respond very similiar to other larger cube small blocks with similair parts. Oh by the way - my 340 only ran 13.70 whereas as my 318 did run 12.87. You only said 14's (which just about all 318's are cabable of) and unless you have a 69 Polara 4 door with 5 engine blocks in the trunk, your camanche should run fine!

Did you say before about 3475 on weight?
