Default just pulled apart my 360HP

Pulled it out last night and got it mostly dissasembled. It was pretty easy to tell it was never apart before- factory steel head gaskets. It still had all the factory performance stuff- red stripe valve springs, double roller timing chain, windage tray, and it must be the shot peened crank as it has that forged look to it. Also has the factory stall converter- kind of cool seeing one that small from the factory. The 340 cam has two lobes worn round- the last two to get oil and the cam bearings are wiped out. Going to take the heads in to be cleaned and checked for cracks today- decided to have the local shop redo them with 2.02 valves and do some minor porting myself. Does anyone make porting templates for these heads?

No porting templates available for regular small block heads. There are ones for 308 castings, but they will not work properly in the older heads. Just open up the bowls to about 85% diameter of the valve diameter, and blend to the port & vavle job retaining the angles in the valve job, and they should work decently.

Quick question for you darktone. Was there a gasket between the oil pump and the block?

Even in the face of overwhelming evidence against him, one individual here insists there is a gasket from the factory.

In defense of no one, Did Ma Mopar use exhaust gaskets on ALL their big blocks? Reason I ask is that I had it from a good source (we'll see) that she didnt use gaskets on Motorhome engines for better head cooling. Any truth to this?

actually I have had my own repair shop for 20 years and I don't remember seeing a gasket on any of the old V8 oil pumps.

I just tore down a 78 440 motorhome and it didn't have gaskets, I haven't checked my factory original 28K mile 74 D100, but now I'm curious. Strange, in the last 6 SB mopes, I have yet to notice a gasket except on a late model Magnum 3.9 so I don't know. :-) PCRMike

In fact, I just remembered, that 3.9 was remanned by a company in Memphis, and installed the #3 main bearings backwards (non oil hole on block). PCRMike

For all of you, the same small block oil pump to block gasket question comes up with Olds and Pontiac engines too. Don't be so hard on you know who. New Melling pumps include a thin paper gasket, even if the factory didn't use one. However, when I built-up an Olds 403 for my daughters '78 Pontiac TA, I think I skipped the gasket and just used 400 grit paper and a reference "flat" to polish up the surfaces. I hope I used Loctite on the bolts. Don't remember. Damn (old age creeping in),

Mark H.

(I did use header gaskets with my Hi-Po 383/440 exhaust manifolds for 20 or more years, but the manifolds were warped pretty bad. I should of had them surface ground - but didn't realize that it could be done easily by my local automotive machine shop !)

Also, just checked my ORIGINAL, UNTOUCHED 28K mile 440 D100 and no gaskets at the exhaust. I was surprised. :-)PCRMike
