What level of performance?

Not much is really needed unless your going crazy with RPM levels.
Usually I do some grinding /smoothing under the filter plate, and enlarge the holes in the filter plate.

Probbably more important to make sure the cam bearings are installed correctly. Make sure the #2 and #4 cam bearings have the holes open that go to the crank mains, AND the top of the engine block (to oil the valve gear.)

Best thing to do is open up the passages by one drill bit size and add a line from the RR lifter gallery to the LF lifter galley to oil the engine from both ends so you don't starve it for oil. Check out Sanborns Small Block Oiling Mods in the circle track section for all your oil mods needs.

Here is a link to a mod (with picture) if you're going to be seeing a lot of high RPM's.

If you read the oiling modifications in the circle track section, please keep in mind those are written for a circle track engine. Generally, oiling is far more critical in a oval track engine than for drag or street/strip. And, oval track engines generally turn more RPM as well.

But, they are generally good to know about anyway.

Good info, Sanborn. I also take the filter base plate and instead of enlarging the holes, drill four more holes equidistant to the other four. There is little to need doing in the block except for the listed mods. How about B/RB mods? I know about the radiused turns, but anything else for the bottom end besides a HV pump? :-)PCRMike
