brake swap parts/upgrades
ok. im using 73 dart spindles, slider caliper adapters for 11.75 rotors, and 11X3 rear drums (finned!). the front calipers are standard 74 dart 4 door items.
i am looking to maximise these for as little money as possible. ive got the braided lines, and a good set of pads, but not the rotors yet. anyone have a raybestos part number or application? what about the best place to get them? as far as the rear drums,, ive got a backing plate and a drum. what wheel cylenders should i use to match the front in basic proportioning? are there any modifications i can do to the drums to make them work better and still be streetable? i know on the SCCA cars we used to drill a bunch of holes in the acking plates to allow air circulation, butr i think water might be a problem with that on the street. what about shoes? any good semi-metallic shoes still out there? part numbers would be great. as far a the rest of the system, im using a factory (reman) 70 duster disc master cylender (non- power), stainless lines, 73 duster factory prop valve/distribution block, stainless hard lines, wilwood adjustable prop in the rear line, line lock in the front, super blue brake fluid, and braided stainless flex hoses. so there it all is. please give me some help. See the parts list in Mopar Action tech site - disc-o-tech article. In short - they used late 70's big car 11.75 rotor, or 80's Diplomat 10.875 rortor to fit 14" wheels.

the disc-o-tech article is what i have tried to use already, and unfortunately my parts guy cant cross the numbers. nor does it give a specific application that is gaurenteed to have them, as we have to order all the rotors and the parts store doesnt know which rotor the different years have. the computer usually just lists the one rotor, no diameter. also, it is not giving me much info about rear drums. any more would be appreciated, especially on the shoes and wheel cylender size.
thanks for the help. Michael |

11.75's were an option on most all C bodies so just pic one. I checked O'Rielys on the cost of the 11.75 and it was way over a $100 ea. and I think the common 10 inchers were cost like $30 ea.

I think you'll have to go fairly small with the rear piston size...
11" x 3" is a big drum for the back. Do you have a limiting valve in the line? |

yessir. ive got the wilwood adjustable prop valve in the rear line. ive also got the abttery, a subwoofer box, amp, and two seperate ignition systems in the trunk to add a little weigght back there.
i was thinking the 15/16 cylender, and dial it back to suit. question still remains for semi-metallic shoes though. anyone sell em for not an arm and leg? Michael |

Do they still make Velvetouch linings?
I'd think more in terms of 3/4"... |

youll have to educate me, as im a young guy (25). what are velveytouch linings?
also, why would you recommend the 3/4 over the 15/16? is it because id have to dial back too much line pressure to the rears and make them ineffectual with the larger cylenders? lastly, on a side note, should i keep the splash shields on the front? the car will get driven in inclement weather. Velvetouch was or is a brand of good metallic linings...
And yes, I think that 3/4" will probably be more in the ball park for you. |

My '79 B200 van has 11.75 rotors. They are $35. Just gonna guess the races are different sizes.

Are you sure they are 11.75?
I thought truck brakes were different. 11.5" or something. Even if the size was the same, aren't the spindles/adapters/ and wheel bearings different than a car application? |

i know the spindles and adapters are different than a car application. made that mistake once already. at least it was pull a part, and only set me ack like 35 bucks.
i dunno about the rotors. my spindles didnt have any. Michael |

I wanted to swap the 1 ton rotors on to my 3/4 ton. Bearings were different. I had everything (parts van) to swap but the county gave me a notice to get rid of it. |
