Default internally regulated alternator swap

ok, im fixin to get flamed for this, but i want to swap an internally regulated alt onto my 360. ive had good luck with 12si GM stuff on the vettes and would like to use one if i could.dont get me wrong, ive loved the square back ext regulated Alt that i use on most the mopars. reason im switching is to clean up the underhood appearance and simplify the wiring. anyone know what a good candidate is? im hoping to find one thats close enough to use lightly modified factory brackets. but thats probably a pipe dream. any manufactur, as long a its 80 amps or above an close to bolt in is a candidate.

any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Michael

I have been running a GM 100 amp 1 wire alternator on my 340 for several years. I made the brackets One bolts to the water pump at the top and the other is the long bolt through the bottom mount that bolts to the head using long bolt spacers. It cleaned everything up and works well for me. One hot wire from the starter to the alternator. I remember it was fairly easy to install but its been a while since it was done. The 340 is in a streetrod. I had a problem with not enough amps using the stock mopar alternators. The car is in a body shop right now about 100 miles from me or I would get a picture of the alternator setup.

For all of you other Mopar people, I Know, Shame on me for using a GM part on a Mopar engine!

I believe I bought it from a vendor at a car show. It was just a gm chrome gm 1 wire alternator. I believe it was a powermaster brand chrome GM 100 amp alternator with a single groove pulley. It was around $100. I just had to fabricate the brackets but if I could do it anyone can.

I made the brackets out of 3/4 " wide flat steel.

You can get these alternators with double pulleys or even surpentine type pulleys.

The 3 wire has an advantage of being voltage sensing. It will maintain a constant voltage ad the battery, or any where you want it to. Where the 1 wire maintains its voltage at the alternator. This allows you to compenstate for voltage drop from long wires, if maybe you have your battery in the trunk. Check here for the info: http://www.madelectrical.com/electrical-tech.shtml

you can go to the junkyard and get 100+amp denso alts that come off late model mopars that bolt in with no special brackets and just some minor wiring changes. I put a denso rated at 130 amps in my 68 charger with a 440. it came off of a 2002 Ram Van. sure, it's not made in america, but at least it was on a mopar at some point.

as far as cleaning up or simplifiying the wiring, I don't get that. instead of 1 big fattie running to the alt with the gm, you are only adding 2 small 16g wires for the field wiring. I don't see how eliminating 2 tiny wires is going to go a long way towards cleaning up any engine bay.

i thouroughly intend on running the two field wires, not the one wire. as far as cleaning up the engine bay. i do not want to hang the voltage regulator back on the firewall, nor do i have the extra bulkhead capacity to relocate it to the interior. hence the need for internally regulated. if the denso were internal, i would happily run that due to not having any mounting problems. but it requires an external regulator.

the harness that i am presently using senses voltage from the fuse block, as far as remote sensing is concerned.

I have a denso alt off of a John Deere, and it is internally regulated.
The one I have on my cummins, I just used a mopar voltage regualtor, and it seems to be working fine as of now.
I have the 12 si on three of my mopars, and I am happy with them, not to sure if they would fit on a big block though, as all of mine are small blocks, the magnum headed motor was real close.
