Budget 360
Hey All, I'm current looking for ideas for a 360 build on the cheap. The engine will be for my 88 dakota with a 727 trans-3000 stall converter, 4:10 gears. The motor is allready in the truck and running but i want to pull it and freshin it up. currently its totally stock (not sure what it come out of, I still have to get the cast numbers off of it). i just picked up an Edelbrock Torker II for $50 and I can't decide on what cam I want to install. Can anyone recomend one? i know it'll have to be fairly big for the intake. I was thinking the Comp Energy Extreme 0.507 int./0.510 exh. lift cam, 2300-6500rpm. Can I get away with the stock pistons or does the cam/intake combo need higher compression?
Thanks in advance, Chris |

That cam
I believe has 286/291 duration, and I would suggest that you'll need around 9.5 to 1 compression to make it work, and good headers. Your diff ratio is good for that cam, and the 3000 stall as well. Those were the recomendations of Comp to me for my build.

Im also building a budget 360. Heres my list so far...
360 +.030 headers comp cam xe262 9.3 comp eddy performer intake, carb KB pistons The cam, intake, carb, headers are on my daily driver 318 right now and will just switch everything over to the 360. So far iv spent about $250 on everything which includes honing/boring,freeze plugs,HV oil pump, chrome oil pan, gaskets and a 360-904 torque converter. |

DodgeRamSS what are the outocmes for your engine. Do you wish to run power brakes.
FYI The characteristics of a cam are more dependant on duration than lift. |

Camshaft, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 284/296, Lift .507/.510
Summit Part# CCA-20-225-4 I do want to run power brakes but i may have to adapt a hydroboost system into it (I might be able to get the parts from work) Mostly i want something i can drive to the track and race it, take it to the odd car night here in london. It won't be a daily driver but I don't want to go to crazy with it like I was thinking about when i first got it. 9.5 compression isn't too bad. Can this be gotten with a set of flat tops? i can't remember the stock compression of these engines. anyone? |

The stock compressions of my '77 360 is about 7.8-1. You should get a set of KB 107's and thatll bump the compression up pretty good. If you need more compression you could always shave the heads or add thin head gaskets.

KB-107's and a .039 gasket + 9.8-1 with a 72 cc head. Fel-Pro also makes a .054 gasket.
Cam seems large for what you have. Back it down some. The XE 274 H (230 to 236 @ .050.) The lower lift will save on head mods if you didn't make them for plus .500 lift cams. It Will also make more torque for the heavy truck. The intake doesn't need a big cam stick for it to work. That intake works fine, but lacks low end torque as compared to a good dual plane. A smaller carb will help. (Like a 650) Or a smaller bore carb that flows well. An OE Carter or Holley 4bbl. is a on the cheap good choice. |

Rumblefish360:
Is CCA-CL20-224-4 the part number for that cam? Advertised Duration 274/286, Lift .488/.491 I was looking at that before but wasn't sure of missmatching the operating ranges. If that doesn't matter then i just might go with it. It would save a few bucks since it comes with lifters. How do you think a 600cfm carb would be on that setup? I currnetly have a 600edelbrock on that engine. i guess i can just run it at first and if i like the performance i won't need to touch it. |
