Well guys I posted this story on the Z28 site and they didn't seem to appreciate it to much so I figured I may as well post it here where it will be. It was back in 87
I was attending Mesa Community College and Classes had let out I jumped into my 74 duster(318,4 speed)and headed for home. I got about 4 blocks away and I rolled up to a red light and waited for the light to change when this guy in a brand new 87 ICROC pulls up next to me. As the light starts to change he starts creeping forward, so I got the old clutch foot ready for dumping. finally the green comes on and he jumps out a car to car and a half lead.I spent most of first gear trying to get my duster to hookup on the tiny factory tires. I powershifted second and regained some territory on on the cheezeball our speeds now where approach 100 to 110 I powershifted again into third and took him by a nose with the red light approaching quickly I finally realized that my cars brakes would be overwelmed if I pushed it any longer so I let off so did mr.ICROC I barely was able to stop in time but I managed it. That was my first real street race I was impressed as hell with my duster BONE STOCK(2bbl.2.71 open rear) and I took out a supposed player I guess that explains there reactions when I posted this story at the Z28 site |

That was a great story, but I'm assuming he had the 305 TBI engine as the IROC was available with that engine and a 305 TPI as well as 87 being the first year of the 350 TPI. My mother had the first 350 car in this part of the country and although I'm not a chevy guy it was extremely quick for a stock car.

How can you tell if an IROC has the 350 or not. I've run up against a few and had little trouble. I can't imagine they would have had a 350 though. Unles their engines were just old and beat to hell.
valiantone - hey whats the address to that Z28 site. I wouldn't mind droping in to ruffle some feathers. |

most IROC's came with the tpi 305 or 350. not a whole lot of difference powerwise actually, i believe it's 10 h.p. and 15 lbs./ft. of torque or close to that. you should have no problem with even the tpi 350's as long as they're pretty much stock FastJeep. if you find a 305 with a 5 speed, that might be close. the 350's only came in auto though. probably be a pretty good race with either. those cars were struggling to break the 200 h.p. barrier by much back then. be wary of WS-6 firebird formulas though. they were the quickest of the 3rd gen. f-bodys behind the turbo firebird, but i seriously doubt you'll run across one of those turbos. the formulas are usually badged as such and have WS-6 on the center caps on the rims. the 90-92 tpi cars will probably give you trouble too, for 92 they carried 245 h.p. most of them are in Z28 trim. RS's of any of those years are usually safe, as the majority of them came tbi equipped. and don't even try at a 93 or later with Z28 trim. the 93-95 RS's and regular camaros should be no trouble either. 96 and up they got the 200 h.p. v-6, which would be a good race for you too. if you care that much about telling the difference between all the years of f-bodys i can tell you. my roomate has a 91 RS with the tbi 305, my truck hangs right with him through first and second. and that was with 3.55 gears and 305/70 tires. sad.

Wow, that is alot to keep track of. I learned my lesson with the 98 camaro I ran with. I never expected to to beat him with my 4000 lb Jeep, but I was able to hang with him longer than I thought I could. I think he was suprised as well. I might of just caught him off guard. The old IROC's & V6 Camaro's are definatly more fun to mess with. I havn't seen one yet that didn't think he was the badest thing on the road. Much to their suprise when they get wasted by a Jeep! The look on their face is priceless. That's probably what makes driving it so much fun. Unless they know the distinction, most people just figure it's a Jeep like any other. Element of suprise is definatly my greatest strength sometimes. I think I had more people try to race me when I had my Beretta GT. And it was a dog.
