Default Tranny swap to ponder...........

Does anyone know if a a904 tranny will bolt up to a Jeep 4.0L?

Mulling over building a drag Jeep XJ (Cherokee) because the 2wd versions are cheap and light and pretty tough with a 4.0L. I prefer a automatic for drag racing and there are a lot of race goodies for the a904 and NOTHING for a 42RE.

The 42RE is just a 904 with an overdrive added, there are a lot of race parts for it.

Many '94 and later Jeeps with the 4.0L came equipped with the 32RH which is just a different name for the 904.

Now, a 32RH I never heard of. Must be pre-90s. I was aware that the 'front end' hard parts of a a904 and a 42RE was the same but a 42RE is a electronic control valve body. Not the same as say a A518 or 46RH which is only had electronics for converter lockup and overdrive engagement. Similarly a a518 is a a727 with a overdrive.
But my point was that a fully manual valve body and a 3000 stall converter would launch a 4.0L powered Cherokee pretty well.
A 2wd Cherokee weights is less than 3000 lbs. Very basic, very light. Uniframe construction. No heavy frame.

Where's the starter on a 4.0? If it's on the pass. side, there's the answer (no). If it's set-up same as a 904 and the rest of the bellhousing bolts are the same, maybe?

Anyway, there are shops doing the electronic trannys now, so why not just get a Jeep-specific torqueflite and re-do the guts ? One shop does come to mind for good info, www.smrtrans.com.

Good idea. Didn't know there was a specific one until now.

Ah ha! What is appealing about building an ugly boxy Cherokee is simply how many do you see at the drag strip?
NONE, because it is ugly and boxy, not because of performance potential.
For that very reason I want to build a 4.0L to be a V8 killer. Wouldn't be that hard with a turbocharger with water injection to keep detonation down.
Doesn't that sound like FUN? I have done the big v8, big gears, big cam, big carb, muscle car. Went to the shows and everyone had exactly the same setup. BORING.

Boring? Absolutely! I have always wanted something a little different and can understand where you're coming from! My wife is very mean (at times!) and when we are at shows she will run over to a tri-5 chebby and say loudly, "Look honey, how unique, there aren't any other cars like this one! The others are all different colors!" LOL
