New Engine
Well,I knew the day would come when the 3 year old engine in my pickup would have to come out,and now is the time.I have decided to rebuild a 360 out of a 1988 d-250.This will be a .040 over basic rebuild with a Comp 264 HR hydraulic roller cam,Weiand Stealth intake,670 street avenger carb. What kind of performance should I expect? All opinions welcome.

Why .040" over? There's a school of thought that says keep the cylinder walls as thick and stiff as possible; you don't get much increased H.P. from the big overbore so better to just clean the bore up enough to be true. (Says I with a .030 over engine)

The 0.005" thickness difference in the cylinder wall between the .030" and .040" most likely will not be the reason for engine performing, or not performing well.

The engine in the truck now is .060 over. The reason it is coming out is because the rings need replacing(The former engine builder used cheap ones).I came across the roller motor and bought it for 50 bucks complete. It had to be bored .040 because of cyl.wall scarring.

Mopar recommends a max 20 overbore on the newer 360 engines without sonic checking. Would like to know if this is a true figure, please post on your results.

Eggman, I have my answer. $50 and scored walls are a good enough reason for .040" over.

I thought 71 to 74 360 were the only blocks to be bored above .040" safely?

Well,if that were the case ,why would there be engine kits available for up to .080 overbore? The engine currently in my truck is an 86 and is .060 over and if not for my right foot and cheap rings wouldn't need pulling. It is going to be freshened up and kept for a future project.

Eggman, glad to see you say you weren't being hostile! It sure read that way to me and I thought it was a little rude to ask for opinions and then argue with those opinions. LOL Glad it wasn't that way. I guess we have to be careful about what we write since it's hard to read body language on this puter! No, I'm not trying to stir something up! Just an observation.

Actually, the opinion he asked for was what sort of performance could he expect from the build, which no one bothered to answer. I don't think he was rude to explain why he made the choices he did, and to ask a reasonable question.
To answer both questions, without more information on the specifics of the build, I will have to estimate about 320 HP, and the reason you can get .080 over rebuild kits is because some rebuilders will go that far. I would never use a stock block with that much overbore in a performance application however. I know that the places around here that offer warranties on their rebuilds, won't accept a block for a core if it can't be cleaned up at .040 over max. |

72, thanks for pointing that out - eggman certainly did not get an answer to the question he asked. My fault for (unintentionally) starting an overbore discussion.
