Single to Dual Field Alternator Swap
Just picked up a new alternator from the local parts store. This unit is suppose to be for a '69 single field car. When I got it home I noticed there were two field wires instead of one. I did a search and found that the dual field can be used. I can simply ground out any one of the field wires, then connect the single wire from the harness to the other? My regulator is the square original black box. I will attempt to attach a photo. The unit on the right is my original unit and the one on the left is the new dual field. The terminal at the 7:00 position might be the easiest and still use the 4:00 terminal as the original unit did.
I plan to have the stock pulley removed and a March pulley pressed on. I want to be sure I get the grounding right before I swap pulleys. Any help??? |

Grounding either field lead will do the trick.
I'm not sure why you want the March pulley. They are normally under drive pullies. These old MOPAR alts had a hard time keeping up at low engine RPMs. Adding an under drive pulley will only make that worse. |

Is that why my headlights always dim at idle...Is there a "fix" for that. They brighten up fine when the engine revs, and the battery never goes dead.

I'm wanting to convert to the serpentine set-up. Not sure if this particular pulley is under driven??

Oh no Mr. Bill... If the car appears original, you probably don't want to take away from that. So a smaller pully will help with that. The down side of a smaller pulley is the extra RPMs that the alt spins, at higher engine speeds.
If originality isn't an issue, then the new ND alt (found on most mini vans, trucks, and jeeps) is a great cure. |

As ed has indicated, the second lead can be grounded. Here's some info

Anyone have a schematic and some helpful tips, and pics. I hate the whole discharge at idle peg the needle to charge at 1500rpm. |

Take a look in the tech archives. There is an entire thread about upgrading. That thread references the 130 Amp ND unit. You can use lower output ND units and still get great results.
Being where you are, there are several auto salvage yards to rape the alternator from. My favorite used to be Mather Auto Dismantlers. They had lots of old MOPARs. |

Yeah they
Yeah they used to have alot. But now there percentage is down to about 5% mopars if that. I like them as I was able to get a disc 9" complete from lugnut to lugnut for $60. Try that now anywhere.
