Default Can anyone ID an A-999 low gearset tranny?

I'm looking for info on how to spot one in a wrecking yard, doner car, etc. Probably late 70's/80's w/lockup converter. Part numbers? Thanks for any help!

I have never found a 999 with the low gearset. Always a 6 cylinder Mirada/Cordoba/Aspen/Volare with a 904. However....I go to the local trans shop and buy them over the counter for about 45.00 and install in the 999. I have not purchased one in about 10 years, so I am sure that has changed.

My factory shop manual for 82 indicates all rear-drivers had the wide-ratio (2.74 - 1.54) gear set with 4 or 5-disc front clutches depending on application, so it might be a fair assumption that all rear-drive cars since 82 will also have the same ratios. Check Page 4 of jordan360's thread on 904's below for more on this subject. John Kunkel indicated that the part ## stamped into the pan rail is the only way to i.d a specific version but I don't know which numbers are which.

Far as I can find out (Factory manuals) there were only 2 ratios used in 3-speed autos - 727 and 904 had a 2.45-1 first and 1.45-1 second, the wide-ratio 904's only had a 2.74 first and 1.54 second.

Any '82 or later transmission from the 904 family (904, 998,999,500) will have the low gearset.

Some '80-'81 had them but specifics are hard to come by.

If the trans is out of the car, the date code is stamped in the drivers side pan rail.
