Usually 3.91's are about the highest a person would want to go without sacrificing alot of drivability. Depending on tire size these gears should still allow you to run on the freeway ok. What gears do you have now? What size tire? How fast do you expect to drive and how long? More info will help. Mopar Mofun!!

I have used an other route. I always used relatively low gears, but higher stall converters. This way you get a good launch and good ET's, and you can still drive with lower rpm on the highway. I used this system for years. 3.23 gears and 3500-3800 stall converters. 60 ft times were low 1.8's with 245/60/14 DOT tires, and at 60 mph I had about 2800 rpm. I really liked this a lot better than higher gears. The key factor here is a 'tight' converter. I used TCI, T/A and currently a 5000 stall dynamic, and all could handle the job. The TCI was the loosest under stall speed and the Dynamic is the best despite of it's higher stall. I have used an external trans cooler and a deep oil pan and have not had problems with too high trans temperatures.

I personaly think a 3.55 gear would be perfect. You would be looking at around 3100-3200 rpm on the highway. I've run everything from 2.45- 4.10 with a 383 and that tire size. The 4.10 was the most fun, but long drives were noisy and reved around 36-3700. Unless your cam has its power band real high gas mileage gets real bad with alot of gear. As for the big converter and high gears, you would need a real tight one alright. I've run the Tci streetfighter 3500.
Anything more than eighth throttle it would flash out to stall speed. Its pretty hard on the tranny.I never tried it with less than 3.91. I hope I've helped
