I'm trying to get my friend to put a 3 speed in a figure 8 Dart, runs at Pueblo, used to run Denver, I'll see what I can do, about 30 pounds less gets around the track faster

I actually have 5 3-speeds. One has a broken tailshaft, one is a top loader, and the other 4 are A-body. I also have a box of shifter parts for 3 speed as well (rods, shifters and misc.). 3-speeds are excellent dirt track trannys and way lighter than the 4-speeds (as you said). I would take $250 for the lot.

No. Mostly Bandimere. I do have a circle track (CNS) car for sale though. It's on ebay right now item number: 110100777492, That auction will end shortly but you can still look it up. I may sell the car in pieces in no takers whole.

I will post details on this site as well.

Top loader? A745? Does it have the little lump in the top cover over the input shaft gear?

Any idea what the ratios are in the one with the busted 'tail shaft'?

The to cover does have a bump in it. I have no idea what this tranny is from, but it does have a long tailshaft so I assume Van or Large car.

No idea on tha ratios in the trans with the broken tailshaft. I have very little information on the 3-speeds, hence my reason to pose the question(s).

The A745s were used behind 318s etc in B-bodies with a bigger input gear than they had behind sixes. That's why the hump in the top. If it has the handbrake on its tail it's from '61, if not it's '62 or later.

To check the ratio, select first gear... that's the rearmost lever on the box turned so that the selected gear isn't reverse...

Then mark the input and output shaft locations with a felt pen or something. You turn the input shaft until the output shaft turns exactly one turn, and however many times the input shaft has turned is the ratio of the first gear.

Hard to get the fraction right, I know.

If this is an A745 it could be a 2.55:1 first or a 3.02:1 first, so they're not hard to tell apart. By the Autohobbydigest site it says that A230s have a 3.02:1 first or a 3.08:1 first, but I'd be pretty sure that commercial vehicles would have had lower than that. No... I wouldn't expect you to tell the difference between a 3.02 and a 3.08. But it would be nice to know if it's a commercial variety with a lower first gear.
