Default Rearend Flange Gasket

I was about to put the axles in my 8 3/4 rearend and I was wondering about the metal flange gasket. One side has a raised ridge around the inside. Does the raised ridge face the 3rd member or towards the Brake backing plate ???

It doesn't really matter but the raised ridge faces away from the backing plate originally.
