Turn the head upsidedown and level it - with a level, not eyeballing.

Get a 6 x 6" piece of plexiglass and drill 3/8" hole in the center. Lay it over the chamber.

Fill the chamber up with mineral spirits noting how much you put in with a gauged (cc's and ml are the same) serenge(sp)- get as many bubbles out as you possibly can.
There you have it.

If your valves don't seat well or are in disrepair, this reading will not be accurate b/c of leakage.

Oh, don't screw with the block. Just mill the heads and face as recommended.

Like I noted in another post, if you're dealing with a big block, and you mill both surfaces on the heads to any great extent, you will need to mill the valley pan rails in the block if you want your valley pan to fit properly, I know this from prior experience.

Sixpackguy,

How much is a "great extent" ? And how much do you mill off the block in proportion to what you have taken off the heads ?

This will help in the volume I'm trying to compile for future reference.

Thanks...

I'd say more than .030 - .040 off the heads needs to have heads bolted to block with head gaskets like are going to be used to check this area. May be with some of the thicker head gaskets it won't be as much of a problem, but I have milled heads to the tune of .070 + and had to mill as much as .060 off the valley pan rails, when using .020 head gaskets. I don't have a hard and fast formula to calculate this, due to different gaskets, etc. Just recommend that it be checked in a mock up, and milled as necessary.
