BS! Leaking Oil Filter PLATE 360 +pics

Where can I buy an oil filter plate and gasket? Is there anything else to it other than the paper-mounting gasket around the outer edge?

I found an oil leak when I was priming the engine; it’s coming from the oil filter plate on the block. It leaked from the top the first time then after taking it off and cleaning it, it leaked from the right side so I’m thinking it’s the plate even though it seems true.

Thanks!

Looks like you have a gasket between the plate and the center fitting. sometimes those keep the plate from fitting tight enough and can cause leaks. I would just use thread sealer on those threads and try it without the center gasket. Last two small blocks I did I only used outer gasket and had no problems.

Hey Dust if you find the cure for your oil leak, let me know. I have the same problem. Not a bad leak but enough to irritate me..

I tried to find that gasket a few years ago, ended up using a sheet of 1/32 cork cut out with a pair of scissors. Mine leaked from the purchase of the motor, it never had a gasket back there!

I know you can get the gasket with a tear down set, but you should be able to get it seperate too. THe best gasket is the one piece that has like three arms that keep the center gasket connected to the outter gasket. The gasket material is the same thickness throughout. Works well. Also sounds like the plate is warped some too.

Cool

Dust, have you tried the local mopar dealer? I dont know the part number but I got two of them some time back, used one on my 340, and the other on my buddie's 360. As far as the plate is concerned, just lay it on a straightedge to check it for flat surface, if warped, the junkyards are brimming over with them. Make sure there is not any of the old gasket still glued to the block. It's a pain to get at when installed in the car, but you need a perfectly clean surface for the new gasket to seal. I glue the new gasket on using a very light coat of ultra copper rtv. Also, you can drill 4 extra holes in the plate to reduce flow restriction through that area. Smallblocks need all the extra oil you can give the bearings. So I've been told.....

Hi pishta, not to start a war, but I would think that you must have a gazillion 318s in your junkyards like we do here, I could go down there right now and prolly bring home a dozen of em at least. The plates the same from a 318 to 340 to 360 as far as I know, but I could be wrong, I certainly dont claim to be a know it all. There's always a lot of vans, pickups, and 80's model cars with 318s and the occasional 360 at the junkyards here. Every time I see an older model with a 383 or 400 big block, someone has already scarfed up on the big block. I doubt you would be able to find more than a couple big blocks on the best of days around here.

The problem with junkyard plates is that they are usually stuck pretty tight to the block and prying is the only way to remove them. Prying almost always causes some distortion and they will leak from then on.

New from the dealer is better.

Cool! I should have assumed that the Magnum were the same as the LA..

I ordered a plate and a gasket from the local dealer (1993 1500 5.9), he was unsure though if the plate came with the inner (center) seal.

#1. Don't use the small gasket where the adaptor screws in, you don't need it.

#2. Remove the large outer gasket, and make sure the outer edges of the plate touch the block before the center part of the plate. If it dosen't, just turn the plate over on the bench and give it a few good wacks (in the center) with a hammer, then re-check.

#3. reinstall with the outer gasket only.

when i pulled the plate off mine a small piece of gasket came with it and i didnt see it. so when i put it back together it leaked.i used gasket remover to soften the old gasket and scraped it of in layers ,very time consuming and labourious.had a spare gasket in an old rebuild set.

I got the plate yesterday.

Should I drill new holes next to the others or widen the existing ones alittle?

Default A better than stock plate

Have you looked int to the Canton racing plates and adapters? They should solve the leak issues and provide for better than stock flow too.

22-595 remote filter adapter, 22-575 mopar fillet
oil filter plate, 25-262 cm billet 8 micron oil filter, all of these

Problem solved.

New outer gasket with very thin coating of Ultra Black silicone
Removed inner gasket, cleaned well.
Tightened to the point where I may have warped the plate if tightened any further.

NOTE: Magnum plate is not the same as LA... the 1993 plate I ordered does not work on my 1977 engine.

You really don't need to tighten the plate super tight, the oil filter actually pushes up on the plate to help it seal to the block. I use the Indian head gasket shalic on the outer gasket. not much to worry about sealing at the inner hole, the nipple just connects the blocks oil galley to the oil filter and I doubt much unfiltered oil gets past the threads. Leakage from the back of the plate to the front at the inner hole is a moot point too, since this is the same path to the outer part of the oil filter where the outter holes are in the plate.

Frams are low quality to start with. But it is rare for any filter to leak from the seal if properly installed.

I recommend the Napa(Wix) 1068.

Get a new plate from the dealer $5-6 bucks, get the offset filter adapter set from MP. The gasket is thicker than normal, throw out the center gasket.

Been there done that, got the Tshirt turned it into a grease rag

You mean you don't have a lot of wrecking yards up in your neck of the woods? Bunches of them down here if you don't mind a drive.

There's a couple of Ecology yards (ones import and the other domestic), a Pick Your Part and a few smaller yards (mostly import) on Energy Way in Chula Vista, and a lot more yards - including another Ecology (that one's mixed import/domestic) - down by the Brownfield airstrip close to the Otay border crossing. The bigger yards have half price weekends every so often that can make for a bargain if you're lucky (and get there early - the line for parking can be 1/4 mile long if you lag). Just picked up a nice set of unmolested 906 heads for $22 a piece, and an early TQ for $20 at Pick Your Part.

Gripe

last time I went to Ecology in Santa Fe Springs, 2 rows of Mopars. 23 cars total, 3 V8's rest were K's or totalled Neons and a few other odd balls. Real deal is up in Sun Valley, north of Dodger stadium. They have Memory Lane, nothing but old cars but you cant pick at them, you have to have them pull the part and a big Pick-A-Part and they have 2 big yards in Fontana, but ChryCo is weak in all yards. People are just not junking V8 Mopars anymore!

That's because there's not a lot of them around anymore. I can remember all kinds of Mopars (including rows of A bodies) in the yards just 10 years ago, but nowadays I'm having trouble finding stuff for my Duster (never had any luck with my 67 Charger). I keep promising myself a trip to Memory Lane next time I'm up that way. The yards here (like everywhere) are a bit of a crapshoot - sometimes you get lucky, and sometimes there's nothing. Still, a day at the wrecking yard is still better than a day at work...
