plug choices...
Can you guys give me the different plug makes and #'s for this combo:
1968 - 440, 750 Holley w/ vacuum secondaries, Comp. cams split .477/.480 x 268/280, Weiand Action Plus dual plane intake w/ space plate, stock heads with new springs, lifters, etc. from Comp Cams, MSD Digital Distributor/MSD coil and 6al box, headers, flowmasters, approx. 580 ft. above sea level. Once I find all aplicable #'s, I would like to compare the lengths of each make plug. I know accel make shorty plugs, but i don't know the numbers/heat ranges? |

I would use the stock champion numbers and then what they supercede to. Cross ref from there. Champ also make the stock plug (Superceded number of course) as well as a short tip version.
A decent counter/parts man should know how to do this. |

I just mentioned them because there an OR plug in which others have equals to in there own numbered system. Now what a Bosch or autolite number is I don't know, but you can cross ref from the OE/superceded number.

Autolite copper core #85's gapped at 0.035". Inexpensive ($1.29) and easy to find. Change them every year or sooner. Work good in my moderately built 440's.
Also with the MSD distributor and ignition, I really like their 8.5-mm Superconductor wire with bendable plug ends (MSD #32739). Kind of pricey at $90. But they are super high quality wire, terminals and boots, and the plug end boots can be bent easily from straight to 45 degrees to clear headers (however, they can't bend to 90 degrees without overstressing the metal !). The trick is to plug an old spark plug into the boot, hold the wire end of the boot with one hand, spark plug in the other, and bend the boot and the terminal. Look inside the boot before snapping in the old plug and note the direction that the terminal is designed to bend. Remove the old plug, coat the inside of the boot with silicone grease and snap it onto the newly installed plug. Mark H. |

Just to lighten your day...at my first National event, I rolled the lights (stick car...no line lock in that day and age), but the other car had not staged or prestaged...no courtesy staging back then. I popped it in reverse and backed up setting the lights. Laid it on the floor and launched in REVERSE when the tree activated. Quite exciting. I got to meet Buster Couch that day. I will never forget it. Have fun. Keep Moparing. |

Holy crap! I have backed my car into a bleach box and left it in reverse, but never launched in reverse! LOL! That must have been quite a shock when that thing went backwards!

Hi Gotcha, Nice story !
Thanks for your recollections ! I also dumped Champions a long time ago. And....my son last year did exactly the same thing you did some 35 years ago, this time at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. He overshot the line, backed up our 4-spd '69 Roadrunner and launched in reverse ! He got it in 1st and hammered it harder than I ever race the car. Anyway, thanks again, Mark H. |
