Default what alternator works the best?

Ok, if you saw my earlier thread, you would know that my alternator went south on me 2 weekends ago. Anyhow I was wondering what type of alternator people would recommend out there. I was thinking of purchasing a Powermaster 50 amp from Year One, but someone recommended I get a 75 amp, since I have a small stereo inside. Any recommendations?

hi,
as much as i like chrysler's engineering, i'd move away from the stock alternator design.

i'd speak with the best auto electric guy i could find in my region. if he's good, he'll now the ins and outs of import alternators, and can hook you up with a good unit (denso, etc.) that fits your requirements. for example, a guy i once dealt with was rebuilding and modifying denso alternators, adding internal regulation and good v-groove pulleys, and selling them to muscle car guys.

haven't owned a powermaster, and haven't heard much about them.

good luck

Question. Are you using the factory ammeter? If so then I would either not upgrade or I would bypass the ammeter as it is not designed to handle that kind of out put. I personally would bypass the ammeter any way as it is a fire hazard and is the last thing you want to have problems with in the middle of the night. If it dies so does the car til you fix it. Also the bulk head connector probably will not last very long. There is a thread on mad electric about the bypass and how to drill and make a pass through for the main charge wire.

Check out their site. Lots of good info.

I wouldn't use a powermaster as it cannot be exchanged at the local parts store. I would upgrade to a Denso unit. They are in the newer MOPARs. If it should fail, you can get another one from your closest parts store.

Advance Auto Parts carries Powermaster. Don't know if they are in all 50 states but they are big in the south.

Thanks for all the help. I need to get this car running(It still runs at the moment, but not for long for lack of charge) because I have a few people interested in buying it. Ultimately, if I keep the car my next goal is to rewire the whole thing, with more modern electronics.
