Default 1964 rear axles

I have a 1964 Ply. rear end with the the tapered axles that hold the brake drums on with a nut and cotter pin in my 1949 dodge P/U. Can these axles be changed to the 1965 and up axles.

Thanks
Jim

I know than can be changed in a car rear end as I picked up a 62 8 3/4 rear with the tappered axles, and put in the moser axles. I would conatct moser or someone else and have them check for you. If they say the axles fit 64 up, you will know what other axles should fit. I'm sure thaere are guys that have upgraded to after market axles, that have stockers for sale.
When I first got that rearend with the tappered xales, I never knew how ugly is was to set one up with this style of axles.

There are no factory flange axles that will work in a '64 B body rear end, aftermarket axles can be made but they won't work with the factory Timken axle bearings so the Green style bearings must be used.

Right on the money.
Been there, tried that.

The tech archives would suggest that axles from a 66-67 might work, but they won't. Too short.

This is going back a long ways. I think if you change to the later backing plates, the later axles will work.

Contact Moser( www.moserengineering.com )they will have the correct measurements or they will tell you how to acurately measure them. They will have the "Green " axel bearings in stock too.

What is probably cheaper than the aftermarket axle swap, is to buy a 66 or 67 housing with axles. Your gear set will work in there, and the spring pearches are in the same spot.

In non greek terms, it's a bolt in.

After the newer axles didn't work on my car (and it's not the backing plates that are the problem, it's the spline contact, too short) I got a 66 coronet housing.

Fits great, and actually improves tire clearance over the stock unit
