Default holley, carter, eddelbrock carbs for a 273commando

I had one reply saying to go with a carter 4bbl carb for my 273 commando but he didnt know if it would be the best way to go. Anyone have any experience for carberation on a 273 V8 that knows for sure?

You can allways jet it down, no matter what style carb it is. I have gotten 800 cfm carbs to work well on bone stock 318's with dead rear axle ratios.

If your looking for what rods and jets to use, your going to need a person who has one and is willing to take it apart or remember whats in there.

I want to get the best performance from it. My mechanic says the motor might need to have the heads rebuilt but the whole thing was rebuilt less then 60 thousand miles ago. Hard to say for sure about that, friggn dude spent four hours twiking the mixture and idle and getting emmissions outputs per cylinder and didnt bother to check the damn compression. I think its time for a new mechanic. the motors tight, no leaks and lots of power but i'm a horsepower junkie and have to make that size motor work at its best because that little space under the hood wont fit anything bigger. The headers on the passenger side only have an 1/8 inch clearance as it is. So yes,, I want the most I can get from it, rebuilt or brand new. I just dont know whats best. I've heard back from a few hear that say a carter 4295 and another said a carte afb 4120 and another said an edelbrock 500 cfm square bore, haha,, I'm no better off then when I started. I bet they would all do the trick but i tell ya,, i was really hoping to get a hands down unanimmus answer. Damn. hehehe

Maker and style of carb is alot like what kind of socks you like.

Carters favor a tad more in torque, holleys favor a tad more in top end HP.

Just an observation.

I tend to use a Holley for anything I am building. I have had better luck with them and they are user friendly with me any way. But like Rob said its kinda like socks. What fits you and is comfortable to you is what you should go with.

oh hell,, I'll just basterdize it and find a dual quad intake and cram it in then drop a carter and a holly on top. Ha ha ha, I should invest in the arabs oil wells so I can afford to still drive it though. Supers over 3 bucks a gallon already here in portland, whats summers prices gonna rape us for. Grrrrr.

Let me ask you, does a OE look apeal to you?
Dead reliablity no hassle?
Then it is a Carter IMO for the above. It will take a little getting used to if your tuning it yourself. The jet and rod combo is weird for some.

A Holley will really be an equal. A little easier to dail in. But it could also included more parts to purchase for a super tune of the carb. Which would end up better than the Carter all around. That is if your willing to really get into the Holley.
In general, I have found the Holley an easy tune. Harder to super tune in upper level carbs. Lower levels, like a simple 1850 are still not bad at all.
They can be a litte finiky.

Default Well I'm used to carters

Never had either holley or edelbrocks in any of my mopars and I think my trucks have been carters too. Probably stick with what I am used to. Thanks for all the replies. Well, just went and bought Wendy, my g/f a 65 mustang so at least we both have cars made for simple straight forward maintanence and good ol V8 reliability. Here is a picture of her car,,, okay, sorry, its a ford, dont shoot me, its always been her favorite year and model.

LOL, same deal for my wife. She allways wanted a '68 stang. So for a wedding present, I scooped up a triple black 302 auto for her.
She was absoultly floored. Never had a clue it was coming.
When your wife shares a car hobby type thing with you, it is a must to get her a toy as well. It just sucks draining the account. LOL

The Edelbrocks are just like the Carters.

Default Craigs list is where I found our cars

Craigs list is so awsome. Both Wendy's and my cars were found there and I check out the site everyday just for the hell of it. I even advertize my website there too. If you want to check out great deals on electronics for your car audio or whatever I have great deals on top brand stuff. I even bought Wendy a Pyle am/fm cd/mp3/usb 200 watt deck for $116.00 including the shipping. ebuyingbug.com the site if you want to help me out and also save yourself some bucks on cool electronics.

If you're (relatively) comfortable with the Carter you might consider a basic Edelbrock, which could be considered an upgraded Carter AFB, but which you can get tuning parts and info for easily and can be sized as you wish.

Dude, try a stroked B block, 451 cubes @ 500 HP. Header clearance is the same but you have about 2x the horsepower and 100% more torque..

Getting back to the original thread question, I would consider a carter or Edelbrock, 5-600 CFM. I never liked the throttle response of the 1850 Holly and gas mileage was better with the Carter-brock as well as the driveability, plus the linkage can be stock out of a 4bbl model.
