Default gasket question

I'm currently rebuilding my 318. Question I have is that the lower half of the rear main seal has two tabs that stick out, and the oil pan side gaskets go over those tabs when in place. Do I need to cut those tabs off to make a good seal, or will it all smoosh together when bolting it up? The rear rubber seal of the oil pan would cover this area. Thanks

I would cut them, if it looks like they are in your way, always use a small dab of RTV in the corners.

Smoosh eh?
Funny thing is, I can put a smallblock together in my sleep, and don't recall the tabs he is talking about, so smoosh must work for me!

smoosh is a good word. I suppose I could have used "compress", but what fun would that be.
