will the new Dakota 8 1/4 rear end center section fit in a 1978 Dodge Aspen 8 1/4 rear end?

I think so. In 77 the carrier bearings got a little bit larger in diameter than previous years. I do not think its changed since. even if it has you can remove a bearing of the wrong size and press on with the size you need. Just order the same Timken Part#. The people at http://www.ring-pinion.com may be able to give you a more definite answer but I would bet you could.

If your reffering to what the service manual calls a "carrier"(the part that the ring gear attaches to.)yes it will fit.
