Default Dakota Rear in an A Body?

I've heard rumors that a Dakota 8.25 rear can be made to work under an A body. I have an A body with a 7.25 rear and too much engine in front of it, a 8.25 Dakota rear lying around, and a limited budget. Can I make this work? What are my best options for changing the bolt pattern from the odd ball 6x4.5 pattern?
Thanks

Earlier Dak 8 1/4 rear had 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern axles. Anyone know if they'll interchange? The rest should be as simple as relocating spring perches unless the whole assy. is way too wide for your car.

Biggrin

Not sure if you can swap the axles between the early rears, but check and see if there is enough room just to redrill the pattern on the axles you already have.

The dakota rear end is 1 inch wider than a b-body rear end, therefore will probably not be an easy swap

i know its not mopar....but a 9" from a granada/monarch/versailles literally bolts right in and you need nothing more than a conversion u-joint from napa. those cars used 8" and 9", the 9 being a bit harder to find, but still WAAAAY easier than an 8.75 mopar, and 3rd member gear ratio options are incredible in their cariety in the older trucks. i put a disc rear from a versailles in my 440 duster and a drum brake 9" from a monarch in my buddies dart. same width, same perch locations (within 1/4 inch anyway), same bolt pattern. even the
8" rear from those cars is as stout as an 8.25 mopar

I doubt the Monarch rear is a 9". The Versailles are hard to find brake parts for.

What about hooking up the E brake cables on the Ford rear end?

Might be an 8" My buddy saw the one I pulled and said it was lighter than the 9 and would work in his roundy round car.

Makes you wonder about the Ranger rear. I know the Explorers have posi's 3:73's with disc brakes in the FWD ones.
