Help Headers or no Headers?

I have a 318 in my 71 Scamp and I would like to know which Headers if any would be the best for my motor. My motor was just rebuilt with 10:1 compression and a mild comp cam.If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Good stock manifolds, Magnums if you can get them to fit, and dual 2.25 exhaust with a crossover (H, X, whatever..) decent muffs to turn downs tucked under the rear bumper. Shiny pipes jutting out the back past the bumper looks cheap. Manifolds will run quieter, longer, cleaner under the hood and wont hurt you too much with a mild cam, will actually help you down low.

Agree with pishta on the Magnum manifolds and duals, except they are all truck units and you'll need to work out how to route the downpipes on the left side to clear your steering box and linkage. Headers are cool looking and cool sounding. They'll leak, rust, and rattle usually. TTI products may be the exception but you'll pay for that, which is as it should be.

Manifolds will last longer and run quieter. They will also help keep the orginal appearance of your engine bay. But, I don't think I've ever seen a car not make a noticable performance gain by switching to headers.

Shoulda said that I DO have rusty leaky Hedmans on mine, but it sounds cool and does add power as Dukes says. TTI's for me next time. I did find a site advertising OEM style factory cast iron 340 HP manifolds, but I don't have the bookmark for that so you'll have to google. They were kinda pricey as well i.i.r.c.

I think its these guys. http://www.accurateltd.com/A%20body%20page.htm You can still get 340 manifolds for around 400 on Ebay although they were asking 700 at the last spring Fling I went to. Magnums are better, and cheaper, just dont fit as well.

Biggrin

Hookers or Hedmans work well with 2 1/4 pipes and an X pipe with some flowmasters. Don't use the H pipe. Unless you have the money for dyno time, they can give a loss or no gain at all cause they have to be tuned to the engine. An X pipe will always give some kind of gain.
