360 Magnum - Cam & Carb Choice
Hello all.
I've just bought a 360 Magnum short block (1.63" compression height) with Edelbrock Performer RPM heads and intake, 292/.508 Mopar cam, Rhoads lifters, Comp push rods, Mopar Performance rockers etc. I want a torquey street engine which pulls well low-down, not a high RPM screamer, so the 292 cam probably has to go. Should I be looking at a bigger carb than 600 cfm? Engine will rarely see over 5k rpm. Would a 340 pre-smog cam work with this combo, or should I be looking at something more modern? Any suggestions gratefully received. |

If it's a magnum short block then you are set up from the factory for a roller cam, all you will need is the factory roller lifters and the spider. Since you don't need to swap lifters when it's a roller you could harvest what you need from the local bone yard for short money and get one of the Comp retrofit roller cams.
If you are going to stay with a flat tappet I would recomend a Comp XE268H or the equivalent Lunati from the Voodoo series. Also, you don't need the Rhodes lifters, they are just going to create a lot of valve clatter at low rpm's. I am running the XE268H in my 360 and it pulls hard from 1500-6500 rpm with a dual plane intake. |

Great advice from dgc333.
Philip, follow this to a "T". You WILL be glad you did. On a carb, since your RPM's are to stay low, look at a 650 cfm carb. Holley or an AVS will fit the bill very well. |

Thanks for the advice.
I'm going to stick with a hydraulic roller cam and the Rhoads roller lifters - less stuff to change. |

I think you will find the Rhodes lifters are for a standard hydraulic cam (292)and not a roller cam. If they are roller lifters, then all you need is a roller cam, if not buy some Mopar roller lifters for a magnum engine.

Rhoads do indeed make roller lifters.
Any way, I've found out that my short block isn't a "true" Magnum (Summit part no. DCC48769130 - the descriptions are a bit misleading), so it has a hydraulic non-roller valvetrain. This makes my choices a bit easier and wider. Rhoads lifters are going due to the noise - it needs to be quite refined. |

292 tuning
The 292/509 will rip both at the bottom and top end if you know someone that can do the advanced carb work required to make it driveable. The 750 AVS or a 6 Pack would be the/my carbs of choice for this cam. Otherwise go with the other guys recommendation of the 268 and the 650 avs for those that can't do advanced carb tuning as specified by Holley or Carter.
