Default Spread-bore manifold choice?

OK, I know this is gonna bring out some tired old repeated opinions, so I'll try and make it easy. I'm going to upgrade my mild 360 to an aluminum spreadbore manifold, mainly to take advantage of less weight, and to eliminate the EGR passages that the stock iron manifold has. I will then (and only then) fine-tune the TQ I already have. So what else is out there, besides dwc's favorite Weiand (and my first choice), and the Eddy Performer?

There is a Holley Street Dominator on eBay right now. $100 with 18 hours to go. Not something I'd use myself.

I'd run the Weiand if you have the hood clearance. Otherwise I'd use the Performer and deep port match the runners.

rrjosh, thanks. Have you run any of these on a mild 360? The M-1 single plane looks cool, the dual-port only seems to have a spread-bore bolt pattern, and the street dominator - well, I'll take your word for it. Anyone else??

With some grinding the LD340 can be used with a spreadbore.

Interesting - the LD340 mods. Other than needing to machine the carb mount, why else would I want an LD340 over a basic Eddy or a Weiand? And where can I find one? Don't forget, mild cam street engine not likely to see the far side of 5500 anytime soon.

Then just get yourself a Summit brand. They are cheap, work well and drop in better than any Weiand,or Eddy mani I have tried yet. Plus it is a dual plenum, dual plane-right up your alley.

Exclamation From what I've read.................

The LD340 is the best intake below the M-1 because of the M-!'s port separation from the engine heat. I still hope to find an LD-340 for my 340 or maybe an M1 if I'm lucky before I get it completed. There are many intakes out there and all the aluminum intakes help with weight reduction but the only one that I've heard that is actually better than my 68 stock 340 intake is the M1 if you disregard the weight savings.

Of course I'm talking about intakes that allow you to clear the hood clearance.

The M1 dual plane intake is just a copy of the stock 340 intake in aluminum. There is no gians other then its lighter. The LD340 should be right up there with the RPM in performance but they are no longer made so you;l need to get a used one. Try ebay.

The summit intakes are made by Professional Products and there quality conreol is hit or miss.

I had a Strip Dominator that was spreadbore as it had a holley spreadbore on it, I would not recommend it for a mild motor but it looks alot like an M1 with a little line between the runners. I believe they rated that to 3500-8500!

Thanks, people. Shaun, thanks for the tip re the Summit item. Price is right, but fastback340's comment is noted. Guess I'm still leaning towards the Weiand at this point. But I do need to check hood clearance first.

Default I'm going to use...........

my 68 intake for my 80 stepside and the stock 72 spreadbore intake for my 340 unless I find a LD340 for it.

Tarrbabe, I've heard the stock iron intake is fairly efficient. I mainly just want to get rid of the messy EGR holes in my 78 iron one. I know I can fill'em with JBWeld or equiv. but I just don't want to risk little bits of that stuff eroding and going through the engine. Plus I want the pretty looks of the aluminum

If you have an EGR valve, stick it on there and leave it un pluged. It operates through vacuum. No vacuum, valve stays closed. Thats why I say no big deal to have one on the intake and working. Once you go to a wide open throttle position, the EGR valve closes.

The inert gas allows more intial timing by the way.

Lightbulb Mother Mopar...........

has taken care of most of the research. We can depend on the technology of the factory. They took great pains to get it right the first time. I wish I could say there was some magic wand we could wave but the truth is that most of the homework has already been done. The truth is that if we try to improve on what has already been worked through, that we will have an expensive and long road ahead.

Just thinking out loud..................
