Default Ignition advance curve

what can be the problem, when it seems that the advance curce is too "big"
when I checked it with my timing light, it was 0 at idle and went up to 40 at 3500 rpm...(with vacuum hose unplugged of course) ?!
The engine will misfire at high rpms but that is quite obvious if the advance curce goes nuts...is it time for a new distributor ? or is there any possibilities to limit the advance curve...

360 with standard point iginition

There are a lot fo different distributors with different advance curves. You can modify all of them, by using different advance springs, and by filling or lenghtening the counterweight limiter holes. I have done it a couple of times, you have to do some calculating, take the distributor apart and perform the mods. Without a distributor bench, it takes some trial and error, but if you have time, anyone with a welder or other methods of modifying the slots, should be able to do it.

That seems quite excessive, the typical sb mopar motor wants some where around 35 total with the initial on a stock engine around 10 degrees BTDC.

You can modify the distributor as noted by DartGT66 or even better get a new distributor from MSD, Mallory, Accel or Pertronix. They all sell fully adjustable units that are electronic and are self contained so it's basically drop it in hook up a ground wire, switched power and to the coil and you are done. Besides being able to adjust the mechanical timing and the vacuum advance there are no more points to change.

The cost between $200 and $250 US.
