7 1/4 to 8 1/4 rear swap
This weekend i'm going to be switching out the 7 1/4 rear for 8 1/4. What will I need for this?
-u bolts -shock plates -shorter drive shaft What else am I missing? Do any of the brake lines/hardware need to be changed also? I'll also be going from a 2.76 gear to a 3.21 SG unit(8 1/4),will i notice any difference in the gear change? Thanks |

I did this swap about 10 years ago. I think everything bolted up. All I did was have the driveshaft shortened.
Hope this helps,Andy |

You will need to change the drive gear (in the transmission)for the speedo. An easy job, after you get the correct one for your combo.

Did it in a Mirada. Shorter driveshaft and new speedo gear was all I had to do as the 8 1/4 came out of a F-J-M (cop) car. If your 8 1/4 came out of an A-body that should be all you need to do. If it's out of something else, you may need to move spring perches. Tape measure will tell you.
