I'm in Toronto right now, pretty close to the Brampton plant. I wonder if I sneak in there, if I'll see anything?

I'm really stoked that we'll be able to see them around town pretty soon, and I just love how the retro stylings of the mustang, camaro, and challenger have been used on new models. But I just DO NOT dig the tail lights on the Challenger.....I just can't like it (the tail lights). Modern version of the 70 could have been so cool....kind of a flush mounted deal. Again, love the Challenger except for....

They might be saving that idea for a later restyle, as long as they don't drag out those big black rubber biscuits from 73-74 again, I'll be happy!

I hope you mean the "Nador" bumper guards. I don't think the tail lights on the 72-74 are that bad, but I'm an owner of a '73.

The later tail lights are fine, I'm just pondering what kind of restyle tricks they'll have in mind later when it's time to freshen the new Challenger up a bit.
It may be awhile though, they don't restyle near as often as they used to and the new Challenger is good looking enough , they shouldn't have to mess with it for awhile. About the rubber bumpers, I used to whack my shins all the time on the biscuits on my 73 Chrysler wagon, I got to where I hated those things on any car. |

I have a different opinion about them after my '74 got rear-ended on the freeway by a Nissan 300SX. Yes, they may be ugly, but they work! There was a large amount of Jap debris laying on the road, and the cutest little set of dimples left in the front front of the ricemobile from those big rubber bumpers. I'm certain the repairs easily exceeded a thousand dollars, the damage to the Nissan was extensive. The Challenger? My license plate was bent, and the bracket was cracked. Nothing more.

In my case, it was just pain and aggravation. That old Town and County was even rougher on other cars that hit it than it was on my shins!!
Loved the car, but had to be real careful I didn't cripple myself walking around it,lol! |

Seen the black one at the mopar nats, to me it looks very close to the '70.. almost like Foose reworked the '70. I like (love) it...

I think that this legend needs to be left in peace- this goes under the same categorization as remaking the old Star Wars movie!

While I was at the Nats a few weeks ago, I bumped into a young guy (early 20s) working in one of the vendor booths. It just happened they were selling one of the 1/18th scale Chall. concept models and I bought one there.
Call it Deja Vu or whatever, but he told me his dad worked at the Chrysler proving grounds. His dad snuck him into the grounds and he has ridden in one of the test mules! He also said there are about 80 test mule Challys already made. I could believe that, because we have seen the body in white cars at the plant about to be put together on the internet. (The Chally is slated to come out in Feb. '08 at the auto show) The young guy also said that during the remainder of the '08 model year, less than 10,000 Challengers will be made (I forget the exact figure he mentioned, but that can go up or down). All of them will be SRT or possibly R/Ts hardtops. Basically it sounds like the plant is utilizing unused production time on their lines to build these first ones. Then in the summer of '08 production will be ramped up for the '09 models, which we should be able to go in to local dealers and order or buy off the lot. These should be more affordable cars (no extra dealer markup due to demand). The longer you wait in '09, the better the availability and price. I probably won't get one until '10. By then the variety of models and special edition models should start coming out to spice up interest in the model. |
