Default Lifter problem

Has anyone had problems with the ends of the lifters busting? I race rond track with a sb. Built a new engine and it shattered the ends of the lifters where it runs on the cam after one race. schnider(sp?) lifters and a st-21 racer brown cam. .014 lash. 7200rpm. Bushings installed in bores.

Never seen that happen before. I busted the top out of some hydro lifters on a race car before, but not the bottoms. You sure you got the right lifters for the cam?

Just throwing stuff out there now, but how about too much valve spring, rpm, lifters slamming into cam lobe instead of riding the lobe. Seems like that would damage the lobes as well. What does the cam look like?

Maybe just bad set of lifters. For awhile when there was a shortage of lifters alot of junk came from overseas.

thats what I'm thinking. I believe they were to hard and shattered. I mean it looks like when carbide shatters. I'll have one checked and see what the hardness is and compare it to other lifters I have and see.

You said the lifter bores were bushed. Did you check them after the machine shop did the work? Maybe they are too tight and they are sticking letting the cam lobe smack the crap out of the bottom of the lifter and your tearing them up??

Thats exacthy what I was thinking DWC. The lifters that are defective out there now are hydraulics that dont pump up and theres a lot of them as in reality theres only two major manufacturers.

they are all about .0015 clearance. All go in easily. I've ran them around .001 before with no problems at all. I dont think that would be the problem. Before having them bushed I had a few problems with them gauling up on the face. Not spining enough was the cause according to racer brown.

Are those not ceramic faced lifters ?

Ceramic is very brittle, would shatter like glass if hit with a hammer - or valve bounce.
