Question Gapless rings

Have any of you guys ever used the Total Seal gapless rings and if so what are the good and bad opinions of them? Dust's piston ring thread got me to thinking and I didnt want to hijack his thread so I figured Id start this one. I will be getting a new set of pistons for my 318 build and was thinking of getting the gapless rings for it.

We have used them for years in our race cars and have 10-12,000 miles on my son's street car(6-71 blower engine). They Work!

Now for a few Tips!

1. The finish on the cylinder walls is special. I forget the finish number but it is super, super smooth(like a mirror, no crosshatch). A power hone is essential and a CNC hone is probably best.

2. We use only file to fit rings, I suggest you do the same.

3. The rings are very sensitive to cylinder walls temperature. If you let the water temp get over 250 degrees, the rings may lose tension.

Default Torque Plate

1973 Swinger

With gapless rings, a torque plate hone is considered a must to fully develop the potential of the ring! With standard rings not so much!

I'm at 500 miles on a new engine with my first Total Seal Gapless rings and I believe they are worth every DOLLAR. I believe Total Seal reccommends a #280 finish and specific ring end gaps and clocking, and you must insist your machinist does what he is told as some wish to follow THEIR own path.

If you are going to use gapless rings, call the individual manufacturer's tech line for the cylinder finish and other specs.

Cheers

The way I see it is...
Gapless rings are like converting to roller camshaft. Worth it if you can afford it.

Unless it is a severe service motor, I have heard they lost temp also from prolonged WOT.

For a little car?

DOOO IIIIIT!
