Default Mini starters

If my 1987 Diplomat was one year newer I could answer this question myself. Anyway, I don't feel like shelling out big bucks for a Direct Connection/ Mopar Performance or whatever their name is now mini starter. Has anybody did this with a junkyard or autoparts store piece? What year and will the battery wire connect to the starter's terminals wihout major surgery? Thanks.

I used a starter for early 90's Dodge truck with a 360. Bought the starter that had lugs instead of plug-ins. Works great in my 69 Charger with 440 4-speed. Spins the engine over just fine.

I was looking on rockauto found a new Nippon Dentso starter for $122. It has the studs for connections and looks like the stock 1964 Plymouth starter cable will fit.

I use those mini starters on both my 440's and they hook up fine, with no surgery. I went to a starter rebuilder shop and they handed me a rebuilt one for $150. I prefer them over the stock anyday. Added benefit...the header comes out without removing the starter on my Cuda. Lots of room.

Beautiful. I think any extra room you can free up inside the engine compartment is golden; especially with a 440. Thanks for the info.

Wow you guys shure have to pay a lot for them starters. I get them for 65$ from the Auto Value store. Ask for a mid 90's v-6 dakota there all the same.

I recall seeing one on eBay that they said it was off a V6 but that it definitely would not fit a V8...

As we were looking for a V8 one I didn't chase it down, nor did anyone else, it went for $10. Lots of V8 units on eBay for around $75 these days.

So it's the same starter for a mid 90's V6 or V8 in the Dakota?

With shipping I gave $69 on Ebay for a brand new unit. Mancini Racing has the correct starter shield for $20. I had to grind a a small area on the block for starter clearance. IMHO it's one of the best/cheapest mods around.

I picked mine up from a salvage yard for $35. It's from a mid 90's truck. So far so good.

Those starters are available at O'Rielly auto parts, new for between 65 and 90
bucks depending on where in the country you live. I bought one in Tulsa last Jan for 65, one in Bowling Green a couple of months ago for 80. Same thing Mancini sells for between 150/200. Order a '95 Dodge truck starter.

dusterbd mentions a minivan starter works. If so there's now a gazillion more sources for j/y starters. Anyone care to comment as to which front-driver starter WON'T work on a LA or R/RB block?
