Default overdrive 4 spd.

can anyone confirm if it is possible to transplant the internals from a non-overdrive A833 into an aluminum case from an overdrive tranny?

Yes, you can swap the parts. Both trans are A833 based.

Keep in mind that two different input shaft ball bearing sizes were used, the larger 308 bearing won't fit in a case intended for the smaller 307 bearing and vice versa.

Ditto for the front bearing retainers, two different bolt patterns in both the case and the retainer.

All the parts are swapable IIRC, however, the OD isn't as strong as the standard 4spd.
