Oil pump failure is not common on any Mopar engine. What makes you think the pump has failed? Only two things can happen to them, they wear out and have too much internal clearances or the relief valve sticks.

I supose the oil could have drained back into the pan, but that's not a usual thing that happens either.

I agree it's not common, but I have seen them lose thier prime.

Pull the dist, and turn over with a drill till it comes up. Remember to turn it counter clockwise. You will need a tool,(they can be bought) or make one with an old oil drive, or some hex stock etc.

A common reason for losing oil pump prime when sitting is a faulty check valve in the filter, try a different filter.

If it continues to be a problem the pump is probably worn out; it is external and can be replaced fairly easily.

I had a 318 (diff motor, but same style drive) that had the drive shaft for the oil pump round off at the pump. I have no idea why. The car only had 330K on it. What's it's problem?

I do agree, either the filter, or the pump drive shaft perhaps. :-)PCRMike

I had a pump suck up a gasket I missed. It jammed between the rotor and housing. The result was a snapped intermediate shaft.
Engine was a 400 B.
