Inland and Hurst shifters
Can anyone explain the differences between Inland and Hurst shifters? I'd imagine they are different companies, but what are the physical differences in the equipment?
I have a 69 Super Bee and am researching what's correct for my car. Thanks, |

Hurst for a '69. Inland is a flimsy toy comapred to Hurst whifters, wears out pretty quickly. It has got a T below the shifter knob, for the reverse lock out.

Inland shifters were used from '66-early '68, late '68-on uses Hurst.

My 65 Dodge coronet street ram 426 4 speed had a hurst shifter factory installed in it. They went to the inland to save a few bucks like JK said.

apples to oranges
69440,
i've driven a couple of 4-spd mopars, one with the inland, and one with a hurst comp + shifter. the hurst, coupled to the chrysler 4-speed, gives nice, solid feedback between you and the gearbox. kinda like the difference in road-feel between chrysler's manual steering box vs. their standard (non firm-feel) power steering box. the inland i used, on the other hand, gave little feedback, and i'd liken it to shifting with a wet noodle between you and the gearbox. not exactly confidence-inspiring for bonzai gear-banging. perhaps the inland needed a rebuildmaybe others here have had better experiences with them. just my experience and .0 |

The Inland shift handle is mounted on three rubber bushings which reduce vibration but give the shifter the wet noodle feel that dan describes.
For those who worry about original looks, there is a Hurst shifter available that will mount the Inland handle solid and give a more positive feel while maintaing original appearance. (of course, the hypodermic Reverse lockout becomes non-functional) |

I just bought a refurbed Hurst shifter mechanism. I'll stick with the Hurst. Just wanted a little education on the Inlands. Thanks, guys. I appreciate it.
