carb back fire
I took the Charger out for the 1st time in about 2 weeks. Last time out it was running good. Today though, I was getting a wicked backfire through the carb if I tried to stomp on it or even push down on the gas semi-quickly. I had to be very easy with the throttle or it would backfire out the carb. What could cause this? After about 30 min of driving and going up and down hills the problem seemed to cure itself. THis has happened in the past also. What can cause this?
Is there any primary thing to look for when there is a carb backfire? I'm running a 383 with a Holley 770 street avenger carb. 727 trans. |

Sounds like moisture is building up in the dist. cap while the car sits. The car will run like the wires are crossed till it dries. Also maybe check for a clogged fuel filter or anything that makes the fuel delivery sluggish. A lean condition can cause a backfire. Maybe kinks in the fuel line? Dirty tank sock? Just things to look for.

A blown power valve can cause this.

Carb backfires can be caused by an overlean condition; carb too big.

I think it is probably moisture too. I had a blown power valve and it didn't cure itself after driving around for awhile.

My bad... I didn't read far enough to see that it would clear up after 30 minutes of driving.
Moisture in the cap is possible. What's the choke doing, during this period of time? crap in the fuel could also be causing this. If you are getting moisture condensation in the tank, the water will sink to the bottom and cause poor running, until it is purged through the system or mixed with the rest of the fuel. |

Sometimes the little brass needle thingy under the accelerator pump squirter will stick if the car sits for a while because of the shitty gas these days. Restricting the flow of fuel. After driving it will unstick. This happens to the Thermoquad on my Fury sometimes. Just a thought.

I don't think its moisture under the cap as the weather/humidity has not been anything out of ordinary and It doesnt see rain.

Is it safe to assume that as long as its not ignition related (Bad plug or arcing wire) that the Carb is going lean when I stab the gas? Is that a primary reason for a carb backfire? |

add some more timing and see if it gets better?

Black plugs only show the state of the mixture when the motor was shut off, it's possible to have a rich mixture in cruise but way too lean at WOT. |

Bog and backfire
Also, may be cured by automatic choke adjustment!
If there is no choke read on! Bog of the hole or anywhere is a lack of fuel, due to too small accelerator pump squirter orifice and poor accelerator pump timing or a faulty accelerator pump. Backfiring on acceleration from idle or low cruise can be/ is a lack of fuel causing extreme leanout. Again this can be caused by poor accelerator pump performance! The accelerator pump is there to make up for the extreme lean conditions of the initial vacuum drop on throttle application. I have seen fractured accelerator pump diaphams and stuck check balls. It's worth a look. You may wish to check the accelerator pump and adjust the carb (choke)better, install smaller main jets, and check the air bleeds for dirt! $ 0.75 Cheers AARRACER |
