Default Transmission Slow To Engage In Reverse

A neighbor of mine has a 904 behind a 318 in a 1973 Duster. It was rebuilt a couple of years ago. It shifts through all the gears normally. However, when the car sits for more than a couple of days, the transmission is slow to engage in reverse. Forward gears engage normally. You can rev the engine a few times before it slowly begins moving the car backwards. Once the transmission has been in reverse once, it is fine from this point on. If the vehicle is driven every day or every other day it shifts into reverse normally. Only when the car sits for an extended period is there a problem. His fluid is full, pink, and smells good. I think the trany itself (clutches, etc) are fine. Is it more of a fluid pressure (pump) problem? To me this would better explain the issue.

The problem is probably torque converter drainback which is a normal occurance, have your neighbor make the first start of the day in Neutral instead of Park. The converter will refill rapidly in Neutral, takes much longer in Park.

No Yo-Yo kit from TransGo has a new spool valve that prevents convertor drainback, but starting in N does fill the TQ rather quickly. I have heard that going from P to R on first start up is hell on a TF, you should always go to N before R, but that is an opinion. Who said that, Was it you John?

Thanks guys. I will let my neighbor know. I wonder how many people have ditched a mopar over the years because they think their transmission is going out? I had a '69 Charger years ago that began to do the same thing. I was just a kid. My Dad kept telling me "You'd better start saving your money because your transmission is going to leave you stranded somewhere". I drove that car for another 3 years before I converted it to a 4 speed.

Default Slow rev

Many times it is also the low reverse piston seal or piston is broken. Very common...

Can be fixed in the car, pull drive shaft and tail housing. But I would drop pan 1st to inspect after a pressure test. bud!

I was going to say the same thing, piston or accumulator leaking. If it was converter drain back he wouldn't have the forward gears.
