Default Header Selection

I am looking for help selecting the correct headers for my motor (diameter, brand, coating, ect...). Here are some details:

1973 dodge charger
400 cid bored .030
weiand torquer intake
holly 750 cfm
closed chamber heads
est. HP (500)
Trans: 727

The motor is currently being machined and built by a local shop.

All help and comments are appreciated.

Kevin

I currently have a set of headers that someone gave me a while back. They are painted black and I believe they are 1-7/8". They are in average shape. Are these worth using?

If they aren't full of holes, sure, headers aren't exactly cheap!

Did you mean Xcelerator intake?

If you want to make 500 hp occasionally on the street or strip, then I'd go with 1 7/8 tubes into a 3 or 3.5 inch collector. I use hooker super comps on my 600 hp Cuda, so I went with 2 inch tubes. I heard Headman fit a little better on some Mopars. Install first, then make any adjustments for fit, then take off and get coated, or else you'll scratch up your newly coated headers.

I have HEadman Elietes on my 400 in a '79 Magnum. They fit great. No issues to cry over.
I'm not sure on the tube size, I forgot. There standard smal tubes. Ave. in size. But you may want the next size up from a basic tube size.

500 hp out of a 400 isn't an easy task. But for a 500 hp engine, 1 7/8" primary headers should work great, perhaps even 1 3/4" could make it with only 400 cu in. What kind of combo are you building, I mean like I said, for 500 hp needs some pretty serious parts, and I would not like you to be disappointed if you only get 300? Which heads, what kind of head prep, what kind of cam, which 750 holley, there is no weiand torquer intake, compression ratio?

Thanks for your help:

I have not bought the carb yet.
I need to double check the cam.
Heads are closed chamber type I think they are 1970.
Using Keith Black pistons.
Compression will be 10:1
Will use 92 octane gas.
Heads will have full P&P.
The intake is a Weiand "team G" (sorry)

We made, I think, close to 500 hp with a pretty basic 400 on pumpgas. We had forged pistons, TRW forgings meant for a 440, so your lighter KB's might be better slugs than what we used. The CR was about 10:1. Heads were 70's open chamber heads, only good closed chamber heads are the ones ending with casting number 915 from a '67 440 engine. And even them, just like the 906 heads takes some experience to port. THe newer "smog" heads are easier to have good results with. Anyway, the heads were homeported and with 2.14/1.81 valves. Intake was team G with a 850 speed demon carb. Stock cast crank and external balance, stock rods balanced with ARP bolts, old MP race distributor, and a comp cams 306R mechanical roller cam. This is a pretty stout cam with 275 degrees at .050" lift and .625" lift. THe headers were 2" primary fenderwells with 3" exhaust. It was in a 2900 lbs A-body, and it run 10.6/128 mph in the 1/4 mile, so I think it might have made close to 500 hp. But was it streetable, no. The 400 with its short stroke needs rpm to make power, we wound that one to well over 7000 and had 8" converter and 4.88 gear ratio to make it run.
