OK, I'll bite (dwc, where are you?) My very similar 360 works just fine with the 78 truck ThermoQuad I rebuilt for peanuts. It has an 800 cfm rating, but don't compare that to Holley or Edelbrock squarebore carbs due to the way the secondaries are controlled. The exception might be the Edelbrock Thunder carbs. TQ cores are still out there dirt cheap, the phenolic main body can still be had from Tomco, and demonsizzler will build you a nice unit if you aren't ready to do your own. OK, over to the square-bore fans

600 cfm will work.

Some will say it's too small, but 440's actually came with 600 cfm holley's in the early seventies.

A TQ will work too.

Cam duration plays a big role in the selection. You can't go by lift alone. That being said, I would opt for a 650 or a Thermoquad.

I'm sorry, this is to vauge for me.

Your '78, -360. Is it all stock inside except for the cam?

Whos cam? (Can you provided specs @ .050?)

With regular inexpensive street headers (?) and the '78 heads(?)

On what summit intake?

Whats your gear ratio and tire size?

There are several good carburetor cfm calculators online. I will send you a few links.

Here I is ... lol. The 600 is too small for even a stock 360. They can move some air even in stock form. The 800 Thermoquad will work great with the .484 cam, but a dual pattern cam would have been better. The TQ will give better low end response over any other carb as well.

I have run 600, 670, 725 and 750 square bore vacuum secondary carbs on my 360. The 600 is by no means to small and my car has run 13.7 @102 with the 600.

The 600 and 670 have much much better throttle response and driveability than the 725 or 750. The 725 and 750 have more noticeable to the butt dyno power above 4500 than the 600 but not by much and there is no noticeable difference advantage compared to the 670.

If your car is going to be a daily driver I would definately stay in the 600 to 670 range. The reason a TQ will work is that the primary venturis are very small which gives you great throttle response and the huge secondaries that give the carb the 800 cfm rating actually will never open all the way on your engine.

The 670 I am using is a Holley Street Avenger and this is the closest to a drop on and forget universal carb I have ever tried. It takes a design que from the TQ; Even though it's a square bore with throttle blades that are all the same size the primary venturis are smaller than the secondaries. The low rpm throttle response and driveability is every bit as good as the 600. Plus it gives my 5 more mpg than the 725 or 750 and 2.5 more than the 600. I am getting 17-18 mpg around town and 21-22 on the hiway.

Also most of the common "484" cams are way to big for a low compression daily driver 360 .
