Question

I have a set of cylinder heads, that came off of a 70' 413 motorhome. Part number 2899948 ..they do not have heat cross-overs, they have angled plugs, 1.88 INTAKE valves (i thought all B/RB intake valves were 2.08 minimun), and a strange 7 bolt exhaust manifold (6 bolts + one stud, also 4-bolt to exhaust head pipe) i've never seen before. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what these heads are and if they are worth messing with. I was told Max Wedge heads could be identifed by not having heat cross-overs. Also these heads are tall (very long pushrods), and the water pump bolts directly to both heads, along with its normal bolting to the block. If anybody could help me, i'd appreciate it.

Sounds to me like a 413 industrial engine. The only one I have ever seen was used to power a pump for crop irrigation.

The best I can get from http://www.pernet.net/~scotty/brb_engine_decoding.htm is a 413 truck head. the 8 is actually a 3 (2899943).

From another site, I get: Gale Turner gturner@asic.sc.ti.com notes:

If the head casting number is 2899943, then those are 1971-77 413, 361 truck, marine & industrial heads.

Gotta agree with 340king, the only set of those I've seen were on an industrial engine on an irrigation pump. I believe they have the angled plugs for increased cooling passages in the heads. Don't think I'd mess with them, personally.

They are industrial heads. These were also used in motorhomes and also on 413's that were used in bulldozers and road graders as pusher engines. They are not worth using in an auto application.

Question

Hey thanks guys... another question.
I have a set of stock 440 heads, which have been 'rebuilt'. (2.14 valves, open chamber, not ported) They are on a 71' HP 440 + .060, forged crank, stock rods, 10.5:1 Keith Black pistons, with a 224/234 (@.050 lift) .465/.488 cam, Weiand Action Plus intake, with a 750 Vac Sec Holley. The motor has a tremondous amount of torque, it bent frame and tore latter bars off rearend of 88' Dodge D100 /w motor. The motor makes solid strong power (WOT) starting at about 2800, but the torque curve basically runs out at about 4800 and the motor doesn't pull extremely hard past that. I was wanting to extend the RPM range, and was wondering what the best way to do it would be. I was kind of not sure what to change, I'm looking to crank around 6200. I tried changing the carb to a 850 double pump holley, but didn't have the correct jets..way too rich. Do i need more cam? I ordered an M1 intake and jets for the Holley, but no parts yet. Also the heads have 'dimples' in the intake runners, which i am told are to 'mix' the air and fuel... are these causing flow problems for me, and limiting the range? Do i just need to port the heads?
