Default How much Oil Pan Clearance ???

I put my 440/727 in the car today . Everything went fine , put the hoist away and was putting the nuts on the motor mounts when I noticed the oil pan was just touching the cross member on the passenger side . Now I haven't put the trans mount on because it is in the mail somewhere so it is just sitting on a towel on the cross member mount . So there maybe a Bit of adjustment there but I Doubt it . The car is a 62 Savoy and has to have a Special Adapter that I got from Schumacher Creative Services . Same mount the factory used for the Max Wedge . My oil pan has a deep sump from Moroso and has the sump in the center . I plan on making a copy of Shumachers engine torque strap . So the ??? is how much clearance do I need ??? I am thinking about putting about a 3/8" notch in the cross-member . I don't think that would a a Problem . What do You Think ???

I'd do the notch in the member just like you said. You'll be good to go.

Ya got me on that one Jack. I've only owned 1 big block and it's in use with a Schumacher kit in the Magnum now. All is stock minus headers, carb/spacer/air cleaner, FBO set up.

The mount is in the correct location, you'll notice that the upper forward ear on the block is thicker which prevents mounting the bracket of the front side of the ears.

Although the makers claim their pans will fit the early B, they often won't because the engine sits much further forward. I would wait until the trans is mounted and then trim the K-member a little if needed.

Default There fit sucks

Jack

Moroso's pans (at least on a small block) must have a notch in k member for clearance. Very difficult to install /remove engine with trans in car.
AND
eg. If you run race headers (the 1 7/8 inch ones that have one tube through the fenderwell that mopar used to offer), you even have to notch the pan for tube clearance. At least this is my experience with them.

Get the zip wheel out!

I'd just use a stock pan and pick-up. Problems solved. Unless you really need a couple gallons of oil.

Cutting the notch is pretty standard on the Early Bs whether you use the Moroso or Milodon pan.I cut the notch in my K member to give 3/8"-1/2" of clearance on both sides in case of sudden stops, hard turns etc.I'm also using the torque strap and the Poly-Loc motor mounts.Manual tranny shifts like butter.

If you decide you want to run a clutch fan you'll need a Jaguar unit available at Napa.Depeding on how hot your area gets in the summer, you might need to get some radiator work done as well.I can walk you through when you're ready.

Early Bs don't have enough room between a MP water pump and radiator to run a regular fan clutch, esp with a 3 row rad. You'll need to get the Hayden 2765 I think (2 5/8") clutch and have your radiator modified.

Now, if you have a different WP or can locate a 64 race hemi fan clutch(good luck!) you'll be fine.

This is how much I notched the K frame for a SB low profile pan. Enough room to get the engine in and room to move for vibration. I few seconds with a cut off wheel.

Here is my significantly more modified k frame for a different vehicle. This will hopefully allow for removal of the oil pan with the engine in the car. No need to go to this extent.

Dave , I have a CVR water pump . I guess I 'll have to wait and see how it goes . If it's like everything else with my car " It will be a problem " LOL Kamstra , That's a pretty extreme K - Member modification . I made a 3" long slice and I went to the edge of the lip . I wanted it to be as unnoticeable as possible . I am going to weld it up to make up the lost strength . I 'll post some pictures when I get finished .

It's not just your car.The early Bs come with a unique set of problems when trying to modify/modernize them.Changing K members helps one area(oil pans clearance) and hurts others-Z bar, drag link, etc.
