Default SRT-4 Caliber

The SRT4 calibers will be hitting showroom floors within the next month according to my vehicle ordering system. What does everyone think of the new little monster? Who would drop the $30,000 for them? They seem to be very popular at least here in New Mexico as there are people lined up to make thier deposits on them

They are more expensive and slower than the old Neon based SRT4. You can read a test drive & review on www.allpar.com

Angry I want an SRT4 avenger!

What came over them to use such an ugly vehicle (the Caliber) as an SRT???? I like the Avenger but don't care for the Caliber.

I think the problem is that economy cars are a real hard sale these days. Funny it'd be that way with the current gas prices. I expect that Mopar is making more money on Calibers than they did Neons but the larger vehicle with increased mass and weight that appeals to certain customers works against it's performance potential.
Sad but true...
I know when I looked at new Caliber recently at the local dealership, I was surprised just how big it was, don't know the weight, but it seemed comparable to my 2000 Grand Caravan in size.
Not my idea of an economy car, but that's what's selling these days.

The Avenger is even heavier, 3-400 pounds more, and longer, that could make a good SRT-6 (Buick made a V6 go!) When they said they were gonna be SRT 4 Caliber, I was like "What for?" Shoulda kept the old one, oh well, my Daytona CS should be right there with the SRT 4s, or ahead of them, and corner better

Gee, I don't know! 285 HP, 6 speed manual tranny, fully equiped for a sticker price of a little over $23,000. Sounds pretty good to me.

Even if you checked every option box you can't get the car to $30,000, I realize there will be the nuts that pay more than sticker to be the first on the block to have one but wait a few months.

With a curb weight of just shy of 3200 lbs it will certainly out run a stock SRT-4 Neon any every other stock or "mildly" modified turbo Dodge vehicle.

I've owned turbo Dodge's continously since I purchased my first new one in March of 85. The 03 Turbo PT I currently have easily out runs all the previous turbo Dodges even the 89 Shelby Daytona which I had a free flowing exhaust and the MP computer on.

I think the 285 hp is a little overrated, but we'll see. See if it'll run with the Mazdaspeed 3, which was right there with the 04 and 05 SRT 4. I don't picture a bone stock SRT 4 Caliber dipping into the 13s, but maybe 13.85 is possible. And it's alot of weight to autocross! The Neons are kicking butt in that around here. Like the early ones. dgc333, what Shelby engine you have in that? manual or auto? What is that PT Cruiser rated at, 215 hp? I know this: miss my SRT 4 brakes! slow you down fast!

My 89 shelby Daytona was a T2 5 speed, picture below;

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...lbyDaytona.jpg

It's gone now, I had to thin my heard of cars and it was the odd car out.

The PT is rated at 215HP but several folks from the Shelby Dodge club have had them on the chassis dyno and were getting some what over 220 at the wheels.

FWIW, I was at the dentist a couple of weeks back and was perusing I think Automobile Magazine (one of the flashy pro European rags in any case) and they had a mini comparison of the SRT-4 Caliper, Mazdaspeed 3 and a VW GTI. The SRT-4 was the fastest followed by the 3 and the GTI took up the rear. But of course the GTI was rated the best of the three with the SRT-4 the worest. The comment they made about the SRT-4 was something to the effect, "power can make up for a lot but in the case of the SRT-4 it couldn't".

From a Car and Driver road test;

"Let’s start with the what’ll-she-do department. Getting an effective launch is tricky, something that’s true of most front-drive turbo cars. The SRT people predict 0-to-60 mph in a little over six seconds. We clocked 5.9. The quarter-mile ate up 14.4 seconds, showing a 103-mph trap speed. Top speed is officially listed as 155 mph, although one of the SRT development guys says he ran a prototype to as high as 161."

A 103 mph trap speed should support a mid to low 13 second 1/4 if anyone figures out how to get it to hook up on launch.

I like the caliber srt. I don't think it's aimed tworads the same type of people that that neon based srt-4 was. I would probably wait a year till mother mopar can work on some refinement.Remember the first viper? "nightmare". alothough technology is better these days the caliber will most likley be better within the next two years. It will be hard to get that car to handle like the MS3 but mabye the guys that have the SRT duties can make some magic. Otherwis I still like the car and with the numbers they put down I'm sure it's a blast to drive.
