Default Rear End Gears

I am getting my 3 rd member rebuilt in the next couple of weeks . The guy that is doing it for me is a mechanic from a rear end shop . I was talking to him tonight about What we should do with it. He said he will check into parts availability and prices in the next few days . My car will be a Street/Strip/??? combination 440/727 with a " 742 " 8 3/4" with a Dana " PowerLok " SureGrip . I am going with a fine spline pinion . I forget the name / number but the one that uses the U-Bolts for the U Joints instead of the straps . I am going with 4.10 gears . What gear brand would you suggest and is there any special tricks ???

One nice feature with the starps is, that you can't break the U-joints by overtightening them. I have never had problems with the straps. I think the "going with fine spline pinion" may limit your gear choice, I believe most aftermarket gears are with coarse spline pinion? I have only used Richmond gear. The 742 case already has a solid pinion bearing spacer, next upgrade would be billet bearing caps. We never had those or the solid spacer ( in a 489 case), and only once experienced a gear failure during almost 20 years of driving with two cars. In their quickest form they were mid 9 second foot brake street cars, 1.40 60 ft times being the best.

Jack, you could talk to Ian Wood, owner of IWE Rear Ends Only in Burnaby. Unless that's who your mech. works for, then you already will get the info from Ian. He's pretty knowledgeable about this stuff since it's been his livelyhood for over 30 years. I've known him that long also.

Tonight , When I asked my " Gear Guy " about Yukon Gears He said that a Lot of " Off Shore " gears are being put in Yukon Boxes and Marketed as " Made in America " He was saying that the American made gears are shiny and the Off Shore gears have a Black coating on them . He also said that " Off Shore " is , China , Korea , and Italy and they are ok . and he has Not had any Problems with them . He was also saying that Richmond gears are Not a Problem to set up . They are Very Strong , But Noisy . He seems to be trying to steer me towards " US Gear " He said they are High Qualty and Reasonably Priced . Anyone heard of them ???

U.S. Gear is affliated with Strange. The comment your guy said about the black coated gears being from overseas is bunk.I have a few sets of gears from Zoom,Chrysler,Scheifer, and all have a black coating on them. These gears are from the late 1960's,and I know they didn't come from China.

I've run yukon and richmond without issue.

The gearset brand won't cause you an issue. (my .02)

As for main cap upgrades etc, personally, I think that is a lot of cash. By the time you are done with that stuff, and maybe back brace the case, you'll still have an 8 3/4, that isn't as strong as a dana or 9", but is just as expensive as one.

I'm not saying not to run an 8 3/4 (I have one in my own car thta run's 11's) but It's still basically stock.(except for a spool and sfui axles)
I don't feel an 8 3/4 is worth pouring money into.

742 case is the best one. As for spline count, you might want to double check, but every 742 I've ever seen was coarse spline.(not that I've seen them all...LOL)

Cool. I have never run a 489,but have the dana 60 and 742. I like them. I have a 742 in my truck and I haven't had a problen at all with it since I built it.
It sounds like you are running the spicer 1350 yoke. That's the biggest one.
Cool.

I think I will stay with the coarse spline and get the Cheapest Gears they sell . I think I will put the Money saved towards a Aluminum Rad . I have a 3 core out of a C- Body but it doesn't seem to fit right and Looks like Crap

Remember there are the spicers,1310,1330 and the big one,the 1350. Then there are the chryslers, the 7260 and 7290. There is a u-joint to adapt the 7290 to the 1330 and vice versa,so to stay with the stock yokes, you may want to consider this.
