Default Porting heads: tool choice

For everyone who might have thought about the same thing:

What works best when porting deep inside a head?

1) Extra long shank
2) Extended straight die grinder (10" long)
3) Flexible extension for die grinder

Option #1 has me worried that too much pressure will snap these things.
Option #2 has me worried that it might scratch the inside.
Option #3 tends to overheat when used for too long.

the extra long shank will work best. however, if you are using an electric grinder, make up a plug box ,with a light dimmer switch, this way you can lower the RPM of the tool. use a double cut style tool. by lowering RPM, you will have better control and will not bend the shank also will cut better.

You shouldn't be using a lot of pressure so don't worry about a long shank breaking. A good carbide cutting bit will go through even something as hard as cast iron very quickly so you don't need to be leaning on it too much. Like aarracer said - patience is key. Personally I hate porting. I can't believe people want to do it for a living...

Thanks, I've ported before and definitely remember that:

1) patience is needed.
2) face mask and goggles
3) DO IT OUTSIDE!!!

A mounting device (rottissiere) made of wood- indexed to different angles, leather work gloves so you may rest the tool bit shank on and guide it without melting your fingers! Light pressure, about 8000 rpm grinding device, lots of patience. AND IF YOU DO NOT OWN A FLOW BENCH "QUIT NOW BEFORE YOU WRECK YOUR HEADS!"
