3rd member ??s
unless I'm getting forgetfull, the numbers 489, 741, or 742 should be on the bottom lefthand side of the gear carrier housing, yet this one from my 68 Newport parts car says nothing there, but I do see the numbers 2467 199, somewhere else, and it looks different from the other 741,742, and 489s I have, beefed up maybe, what is the pinion size?

It's my understanding that if it it doesn't have the usual numbers it's an earlier version, and is essentially a 741.
Whether that's true or not is anyones guess. |

I'll have to wipe more grease/gunk off. Definitly beefier looking than my 742, I need to buy a camara!

A stock 68 Newport would have a 742.
It would be on the driver side,a big X(741,2-742,or 9-489). Your numbers don't match with the 8 3/4 numbers at all. |

after looking at bigblock dart, says 742s woulda been in the heavier cars I think, this thing has gotta weigh (used to weigh before I got ahold of it) 4000 pounds, had a 383-2 barrell

If it is factory original and it is an 8 3/4, it should be a 742.
Definitely clean off the grease and see if the numbers are just hiding under the muck. |

It's not a guess. There were early 741s and early 742's,meaning a 742 without a big 2 and a different casting number, but with an inch and 3/4 pinion, cast number 1634985 and the little 'un was the 1820657. The change in casting numbers happened before 60 for the 741 and after 60 for the 742. The date code was on the ring gear.But...they were the same, beside the tapered axles.

I'm questioning whether this is a 742, simply because my 68 newport had a 742, and it was clearly marked as such.
Now it doesn't have a 742, because my 330 does. After 40 years, the chances of the 742 being swapped out somewhere is at least as good, as it not being swapped out. |
