Default Holly 2 barrel & Carter 2 Barrel

Me again, sorry to bug yas;
I put a recon Carter on the 318 with the lean burn done away with.

It does the same as the Holly did...really rich on warm up til the choke finally opens all the way. Lots of black smoke and I have to feather the engine to keep it running. It bucks like crazy with steady throttle til it warms up.When warmed up it is fine.
I also changed the Thermostatic choke assy and made sure the wire to it was hot with the ignition switch ON.
Seems the Choke stays closed too long and there is no adjustment I can see!!

The other issue is the Holly (it to works better)Has no timed port for the Dist. Is there a fix for that?

Check the choke pull off. It should pull the choke slightly open when the car starts. It is adjustable by bending the little rod that attaches it to the choke butterfly.

Idea BigBlockDude is right

The only adjustment on the newer chokes is to bend the rod to pull the choke off quicker. Try it, it should help.

Default Choke pull off

Thanks for the tips...

The choke pull off has full Vac on it when the engine starts. So when adjusting it to hold the choke open 3/16" or so when cold seemed to work.
Now for the next question..when the engine starts cold the pull off opens the choke all the way. Is this correct? Looking at the pull off and the choke thermostat I see no other way for it to work! If so I can now adjust the high idle screw for cold starts.
I drove it around the block a few minutes ago and all symptoms seem to be gone. You guys are the greatest!!!!!!
Tomorrow morning when it is 25' out I am going to test drive to the gas station and see how she does.
